I just ran across this on the Gibson forum. I'm no expert, but that logo looks pretty strange indeed. So, is it real or some '80s Japnaese fake?

By the way, read the questions this guy is getting. They made me crack up. That is the main reason I am posting this.

link...I'll tell you as soon as I see it!

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

Ok...I'll tell you what I see from the pics...

-I have never seen a Gibson Moderne with that Pickguard, an Ibanex yes, a Gibson no!

-That grain does not look like Limba to me, it looks more like stained ash...Ibanez did use ash for some of theis V's and Explorers.

-the headstock is wrong as is the placement of the tuning keys, as well as the "string retainers" are all wrong

-Gibson put gold, not chrome on all the Korina guitars, and non of the Gibson reissues of anykind use chrome, if it's not gold it's nickle...that guitar has chrome hardware.

-That Gibson logo came from a Gibson amp, the Modernes has a Gold logo.

-The FIRST Moderne "re-issue" happened in late 1982, they built 3 of them for Howard Leese (Heart), they prototyped those guitars early in 1982...in fact if you look at my avatar, 3 of the 4 Modernes pictured there are the real protptype Modernes.

-It does NOT have late 50's style strap buttons

-there are no numbers or markings of ANY kind on the guitar, except for the incorrect Gibson logo.

-The neck pickup ring should touch the end of the fretboard, it does not

I have seen and played (and almost bought) an Ibanez Moderne, and that is one! Look for a pic of an Ibanez Moderne and you will see all the same things that are wrong with that guitar on an Ibanez.

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

I was hoping this post would go on for a bit, but you showed up. You are waaaay too thorough! Just kidding. Yeah I did notice the lack of serial number on it anywhere, but hey, it's a "prototype", right? I didn't think so. I just busted out laughing when I read the questions this guy is getting. He is getting ripped apart, and posting them on his auction. I wonder if he really wants to sell this thing or just waste is name and his money.

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

yah that guy is acting real strange about the questions, it would lead me to believe this guitar was some crappy $300 japanesse guitar with a gibson logo on it rather than the real deal, it wouldnt be hard for him at all to check out whats going on under the pickgaurd

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

It's funny, the logo looks puffy, like it's glued on top of the finish of the headstock.

It is supposed to "Stand up", but it is the wrong logo...the early Gibson amps had them, and that is one!

Will the real Gibson logo please stand up?

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

Oh, I didn't notice that on your Moderne. Aren't those supposed to be neck-through, or are they set?

They are set. The only neck through Gibson I know of are Firebirds, but did yo know that the original Les Paul design was a neck through???

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

thats not a gibson moderna, and its certainly not a prototype. those go for HUGE dollars if you can find one

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

The only reason I won't say it's a scam is because he doesn't say anything definite about the guitar. Everything is implied. He's a phony, and so is the guitar. He seems to know what a PAF is, yet there's no pics of the pups. I'd stay away.

well...the 4 in my avater (3 are prototypes and one in a regular 1983 production model) were on Ebay for $17000.00 for all 4 and in 7 days did not get one bid...

Implied or not, he IS misleading people. There are people on the Gibby forum that know of him and this is not the first time.

He's probably refering to the real prototypes, none of which have ever been found (so there is no defined value). Those 80's modernes are an interesting curiosity, but don't arouse much interest...yet. "Prototype" or not, they're still an 80's copy of a 50's guitar design shrouded in mystique.

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

I think that everyone who came across this guitar on Ebay knows what it is. I just wanted to give you guys a good laugh. :)

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

The guy is from Stratford; the only place in CT I have severe "issues" with (just trust me on this). I've seen A LOT of sketchy people from there and I refuse to get anywhere near there for ANY reason. The pictures obviously show it to be a fake, and if you only knew about the area, you'd see why and what kind of "character" this seller is.

Re: Gibson Moderne on Ebay, the debate: Is it Real?

Definetly a good find on the fake Gibson, Post more of these funny auctions, those questions and answers on there crack me up!
Rock On :smoker:
