Gibson RD Standard

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Yeah, I don't want redundancy either. That's why I'm feeling some reticence over the RD Standard. I'm happy with my Tele, and although my Strat is a MIM it's still working nicely for me. The SG is my #1, and the LP fills my humbucker void.

Does the maple cap really have that much of an effect on the tone? I mean, I can hear the difference clearly between the SG and LP, but the pups alone are so different that it's hard to isolate the tone woods.

It's not just the maple cap - it's the single-cut nature of the neck joint, the fact that the top is carved and not flat, different geometry in general.. not to mention wiring...

But more importantly than any of that, the RD has a different enough vibe that it's going to inspire you to play all kinds of different things than the other two Gibsons you own.

Adam, you're going about this all wrong. Allow me to feed you your lines:

"C'mon, Keith. You don't need this guitar. You're only into it because you saw one great Ghost show. Besides, how do you intend to pay for this?"

I'm going about this all right. And you know it. Succumb to my influence. Let my will flow through you!

Re: Gibson RD Standard

The Surh and the G&L seem rather similar in the super strat department. Did you give the Surh the boot?

Yes. The Suhr got sold. I then bought an Eric Johnson Strat and pocketed the extra cash.

FWIW the EJ Strat is a much cooler axe.

wow - did you start a thread for that? you take cool pics on the back fence, I'd love to see it! (could pm if don't want to further hijack thread, hehe)

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Because it fills an obvious void in your collection.

In the world of Gibson solid body electrics, there is the LP tone, the P-90 tone, and the massive-flat-slab-of-mahogany-with-humbuckers tone. This tone can be achieved by a number of different models - Vs, Explorers, and all-mahog RDs... and as far as I know, you don't have any of those...

I'll definitely agree that an Explorer gets the massive-slab-of-mahogany-with-humbuckers tone, but I'll have to disagree on Vs. With that massive piece of wood missing right behind the bridge, I've found them to be more mid-rangey and SG-like. YMMV.
