Gibson SG fans????

Hi guys,

I currently have an LP Standard which I love but want a nice guitar to compliment my LP and was looking at some S Standards and '61 reissue models. Is the Standard neck stronger than the '61 neck? Seems thicker and possibly more steardy.

For the SG players on the forum, what are your thoughts? I like a guitar that will do cean to heavy, classic to modern and I can do that with my LP with the right pickups and amp. I am hoping the SG would serve me as well.

I just can't get into Strats so I never really consider those and I am actually thinking I would eventually like a PRS of some sort. I have become a lot more interested in resale value because you never know when you may need to sell for financial reasons at home or just for piece of mind. I especially like resale value considering how often I change my mind!

So, what is the concensus on the SG?

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I like listening to guys like Derek Trucks, Duane Allman and Eric Clapton playing SG's, but I've never gotten on with them myself. They just feel to flimsy and the neck and neck joint is to fragile. Lot's of repaired necks and neck joints on old SG's.

Please don't tell me that Lew! :smack: I can't afford to get that PRS just yet. Maybe a used Dean hardtail. I think the newer SGs are supposed to have stronger necks, etc.

I doubt they are...sorry!

Re: Gibson SG fans????

the neck on my SG is similar to the neck found on the les paul custom, but the frets are diferent..
they can do all.. classic rock, metal, hard rock etc .. but i second that. the neck joint is just a bit too fragile.
i'd like to glue it on and bolt it after, but i dont have the guts to take it off

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I've got the SG Special and with the JB and '59 in it, it can pretty much do it all. Extremely playable.....and I don't really see where the neck joint on it is that fragile.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I just talked to a good friend of mine who said he has no issues with the neck joint or tuning of his SG Special and he loves it.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

well.. mine's an epiphone so that might be an issue also.. and not a very good one either

Re: Gibson SG fans????

The '61 reissue neck is fine. I've had no problem. You may have to adjust depending on how chunky your LP neck is.

Unfortunately true.

But a NIIICE ´74 SG just slipped through my grubby mitts yesterday. Another guy and I bid the same amount, and even though I could have reacted, i somehow missed it. :smack:

Sooo, to lick my wounds, i picked up a new set of nut files :D:D

Keep in mind I resort to the "suicide bend" on occasion since I don't have a whammy bar ("suicide bend" being when I hold the body and increase or decrease the neck tension).

Re: Gibson SG fans????

i stopped doing that when i heard the joint go crick-crack .. no more neck bending for me.. i'm afraid to play agressivelly on it cos i think it'll snap

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I have a 1990 SG special and I really like it. The neck hasn't given me any more problems than my LP, both of which are none so far... *knocks wood* And I do the neck bend trick pretty often as well.

As far as tone, IMHO SGs are lighter and more resonant than LPs, and therefore give more acoustic output, resulting in a cleaner and stronger sound. Not to say that this is better or worse than an LP, just different (I really like both depending on the playing situation). An SG is a worthy addition to any guitarist's arsenal.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

From a building standpoint, the neck joint on an SG is far weaker than an LP - the original SG neck joints used to be notoriously bad - they're better now
But stil there is no way to get comparable sustain or tuning stability with that small a glueing surface. That being said, they are darn good guitars and can cover a lot of ground. Just some things to consider.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I play SG's cause they have more bite than a LP. Which helps out alot in a band situation when you need to be heard.........

i took the neck off of my old epiphone sg and glued it on. it was fun. and it solved lots of tuning problems.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

my sg neck is great. it doesnt feal or look fragile at all. and they have better higher fret acces than lps.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I'm a little partial to SG's myself. They have a voice all their own. Mine is a '66 Standard (last year of the small pickguard and the original neck) with Antiquity Humbuckers and a Bigsby tailpiece. It is a very toneful old hunk of mahogany and is unafraid of Les Pauls.

I think the trunk of the tree in my yard is weaker than the neck joint of an LP.

Seriously though....that heel on an LP is HUGE.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

while the joint appears big on a LP, the amount of glueing surface (that is to say, the size of the actual tenon) while sufficient is shorter and more narrow than it could be
that's all i'm saying - LP's still sustain nicely
