Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Cool. Sounds like a great set of pups. Has anyone put them in an SG?

Tonight I just moved my Whole Lotta Humbuckers from a 'weight relieved' Les Paul Studio into my solid SG. Wholly smokes they are unbelievable. They were great before, but now I think they really benefit from a solid guitar. And, if you don't have the Jimmy Page wiring, you're not even hearing 1/4 of what these pickups can do. I did the full JP wiring with the extra 2 switches on the pickguard. Worth every minute of effort. Every sound I'm getting out of these is so good and useful (not all of them are 'go to' sounds mind you, like the out of phase choices I would use less, but it gives me Stratocaster type quack on a Gibson guitar when I need it). Particularly middle position with both in parallel coil is incredible chime. And mixing bridge single with neck humbucker and vice versa is clear. Also, single coil on the bridge doesn't lose volume much, it just cleans up a bit and gets brighter. Single coil on the neck has a Strat quality to it. Series out of phase is fantastic also.

FWIW I had Burstbucker Pros in my Les Paul Studio before. No comparison. Well, the BBs sucked by comparison. They almost had the same output and honk tone of a Seth, but they had no clarity. Notes were muddy and indistinct. Whole Lotta Humbuckers are a completely different animal. Really magic sounds, and easy to play.

Beaubrummels,
I am now just reading your post #60 I think it is, but before I read the rest of this thread I must tell you, your reference to Will Greer was so far out there and funny that I laughed out loud, which I rarely do when I am alone.
And the rest of it may come under PC attack, but I laughed out loud at that too. You are a funny guy. I tried to hit "like" but my IPad won't let me for some reason.

Just as Newton’s Third Law of motion states “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” a similar notion can be applied to the recent comments supporting Gibson[FONT=Azuro, sans-serif]’s overpriced guitars and some folks trying to say it’s a Gibson SG!

… AND then there is that comment about poor old Will Greer!

You all make me laugh how I could easily get you all wound up! hahaha

You guys crack me up with the whole Gibson overpriced guitar thing. What is overpriced for you might not be for others. Do you drive through a neighborhood of McMansions and tell the people they are being ficically irresponsible and might have character issues. Or walk into the Mercedes dealership and tell everyone in the showroom they are idiots? How about the guy enjoying a $100 steak and a $200 bottle of wine in the 5 star restaurant do you get in his business? Probably not, they don't put too many 5 star restaurants next to the trailer parks. The closest some of these Gibson bashers will ever get to a Mercedes is to change the oil or a tire.

If its not a attempt to bluster his ego then please tell me exactly what was his point in posting that picture? Especially with the drivel he wrote. He says its to one up me... if thats not phallus measuring then please tell me what it is?

This stuff makes me laugh!

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Wow. Was I gone that long?

Anyway...
Slapped some Railhammers in there. They came up for sale from Joe Naylor over at TGP, so why not.
Chisel bridge, Hyper Vintage neck. Just did it an hour ago.

They were exactly what I was wanting. Lil more output, extended frequency range, more modern sounding.
Tight bass, highs are great and not thin...

I immediately miss the warmth and mids of the BB 1 & 3. I guess I'm just a vintage pickup kinda guy.
I like the bite of the mids of the BBs, just need a bit more clarity. According to beaubrummels up there, sounds like the WLH might do the trick. I'm guessing they will be similar output to the BBs. Ya know, I might just go for the bridge. The BB1 is actually pretty nice. I nail the Slash tone pretty good with it.

Carry on with the silliness...or not.

Edit: Oh yeah, the Railhammers have short legs, the BBs long. Both work fine. I did add some pickup rings when I added the RHs, to level the pups with the strings. I like the pup rings on the pickguard.

Sold the RHs, put the BBs back in. Gonna keep the BB1 in the neck. Gonna replace the bridge. The BB3 in the bridge sounds puny and nasally. I like the way it reacts and the growl it gives, just want a lil bit more. Gonna get the WLH and see how it does.

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

So, got your WLH installed yet? Just swapped mine from my LP Custom into my SG. Thickened it up perfectly.

Finally picked up a set tonight. I was gonna just go for the bridge, but ended up getting the set. Very much looking forward to installing them next Monday or Tuesday, working the weekend. Sounds like they're gonna rock!

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

If they sound even half as good as that sound clip, then I'd say go for it.

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

To the OP...I like the idea of a Black Winter set or some combination of Pegasus / Custom / Jason Becker in the bridge with Distortion neck / Sentient / 59 in the neck would give you a nice alternative to the vintage tones you already have covered.

I bet a Distortion neck (SH-6n) with an RCA4 would sound killer, especially with a PB in the bridge.

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Slapped the WLH set in and rocked out for a couple of hours.
It's thicker, with a different attack. The neck pickup isn't as bright. It is beefy and really growls. The split mode is stronger.
The bridge is the sound I was thinking of when I started looking for a different pickup.

These pups thicken up the lower end of the frequency spectrum more than I'm used to. I think I'm used to the open attack of the vintagey A2 pups.
The attack and compression will take some getting used to. They hit the amp harder than I'm used too, which I guess is the point of these pups!
They definitely rock harder, but retain dynamics and clarity.

I'm glad I sprung for the set. I will need some more time with them to really decide if I like them better.

Exactly, they kick serious butt in my SG. Haven't tried them split yet though. Think I'll order some 500k push/pull pots and some new caps by the end of the week.

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

A lil more playing time, things are good.
It's like I went up a couple string sizes.
Thicker, louder, more beef, retains clarity and dynamics. Good stuff.

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Twisted and heavy!
