Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

Re: Gibson SG - Replace Burstbuckers, Whole Lotta Humbucker?

So, after more time with these pickups...
They are fantastic. They have great attack, sustain and articulation. Big, huge sound.
I'm struggling with the amount of bass they add. I'm used to the vintagey pups with A2 mags. I have lowered the bass side to around 4/32", have the treble side closer to almost 2/32". I at first tried lowering the pup quite a bit, but the sound wasn't so great. I've got them where they sound best now. I'm just not used to that amount of bass hitting my amps. I guess I like my tone to not have so much bass in it. One thing I haven't tried yet is 50s wiring. I'm thinking that might brighten things up a bit.

Do I just move the tone cap over to the other lug on the volume pot, or do I need to move it on the tone pot as well, and change the ground lug on that pot?

Yes, you can just move the tone/cap wire to the middle lug on the volume pot. (Though some diagrams show the connection on the tone side going to the middle/wiper lug. I'd have to go back and experiment again, but my recollection is on the tone pot side, it doesn't make any difference which arrangement of middle/outside or even if the cap is between the volume and tone pot, or if the cap is between the tone pot and ground - doesn't matter. Only the lug connection on the volume pot matters, sound-wise, for 50's wiring.)

Thanks for the link. I'll wire up the sg and report back.

I have them in my LP Custom and they're great. Bit more push than the '59 set with great clarity. Overall, still a vintagey vibe.
Here's a clip with a SG.

Now THAT is some great tone and you are a monster player!

I decided to pull em and put em up for sale in the emporium. Guess I like the lower output, A2 pups.
