Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

here in the netherlands that guitar is quite popular by the way.

it wont give you strat-tones, because the pickups are humbuckers, and unsplitable. split them and you can come very close to a strat

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

Replace the pickups! OR just get an epiphone SG custom ( 3hb's ) and put phat cats in them!!

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

i'd take the sg3, put in a prails in the middle, 2 motherbuckers in neck and bridge, and play with some pushpull pots and/or some toggles...

but why not a warmoth if you're gonna mod the guitar?

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

Apparently these blade pickups are really hot. I've never seen or played one to confirm it but generally that's what I've heard.

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

Why not just pick up a strat for strat tones?

A Very Well Known Fact about me among my friends :

. . . i can not gell with a strat ( even find it hard to say that word )

My brother's 1st guitar was a squire strat. Well made, for the money but the shape n'feel is not for me !
Believe me, i tried for 3years. Then one day i wehnt to a guitar shop (long before i decided to play seriously), can't even remebre why, and picked up a Les Paul and BOOM, it just felt right !
I am also a fan of Tele's & Jaguar's, but s..t..r..a..t..s, ermmm, not for me !!!

'Buckers ???

Well, well, well, i did not know that ! :11:

Why would they do that ?
Seeing that thay allready have a 3xfull sixe humbucker model out ?
WEIRD !!!

Beacuse this guitar comes play-ready. (i.e. is not a BYOC !)
I never build a guitar before ! :disappoin

Never heard of the "Motherbucker" before ?
What is it ?

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

i'm thinkin, you've got single coil guitars already, and a Les Paul is your idea of 'right' -- you need a guitar with real grown-up humbuckers. i mean Hot Rails and Cool Rails don't sound anything like single coils but they don't sound good in the same way that a normal humbucker would.

put some 59's in that empty SG you have man. If you really can't bare the thought of having a guitar without single coil tones, put in some 59's and the Jimmy Page mod.

Thanx for the feedback man !
Even though the strat is not for me, i love the shape n'feel of an SG - i am just weird like that !

Like i said, i am probably gonna give my 'bucker SG some A2P's !
But i still like the idea of having a S/C SG :notworthy
And Dan from the Black Keys, makes his twin blade S/C-size 'buckers sound like true (hot) S/C'ers in his Tele !

Are you saying that the '59s are more vintage-voiced than the AlnicoIIPro's ?

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

i've never used a2p's but i always hear people raving about how good 59s sound in their SG's...i mean if you want real vintage sound i'd get Seth Lovers 'cuz those are supposed to made exactly like the first humbuckers were.

that SG with singe coils would probably not even get that close to a Strat tone if you put the best Strat pickups in it...it's built completely different from a Strat.

The dude from Black Keys doesn't get a good Tele singe coil tone -- he gets a great Tele with rails pickup sound. If you take a twangy guitar and put big-sounding pickups in it, you get a bigger-sounding twangy guitar...it's gonna be hard to find pickups twangy enough to make a mellow SG sound that bright.

Re: Gibson SG Special 3 - Gibson's Strat ?

The second SG, blond with black plastic...that is beautiful.

And by the way, anyone who doesn't like Strats can't be all bad.

Hey Orpheo, found this at another SG Forum (about the SG Special 3)

"...Here’s the info that came from Tom Meyers, our Gibson rep, who got the word directly from the folks at Gibson. There is no official name for the pick-ups in your SG but here is what we do know. The pickup reads about 6.0 on the ohm meter and has 7000 turns of 42 gauge wire on 2 small ceramic magnets. As Tom says, “The sound/tonal quality is of a stronger dynamic range than similar pickups from other competitors. Word to placeboemotion on the tape wrap on your pickups, the tape should offer enough protection from normal use."

Now is syill do not know waht is in them :lmao:

I'll go and see what the MF site has to say !
