Re: Gibson Trademarks 335 Shape

It is impossible to answer. Simply because there is no Chinese product that is better in quality than its American counterpart. It is like trying to compare Kias and Mercedes. It simply can't be done because they are on two different levels of manufacturing standards.

You're plugging your ears to the issue of whether those better standards are a) of practical importance, and b) worthy of the price difference. You might win a battle, but you lose the war, because like I said before, in nearly every other area of manufactured goods, Eastern produced products are considered a smart purchase, and for that reason, many goods are not produced in the US at all.

Re: Gibson Trademarks 335 Shape

Many goods are not produced in the US because they are cheaper to produce elsewhere. Doesn't mean it's better. Just cheaper.

It's that simple.

Re: Gibson Trademarks 335 Shape

I think this is a cheesy move on Gibson's part and is no different than when Colt tried to trademark "M4" when it is a military designation for a military rifle, or when Harley-Davidson tried to trademark an exhaust sound.

Between this and the thing they got into with Warmoth, I'm having second thoughts about the fact that I own a couple Gibson products.

Buying decisions are never strictly about cheaper, they're generally about value. value = benefit / cost. Using effects pedals as an example, because it's so clear cut:

Paul Cochrane Timmy Overdrive

cost: $129
benefit: well reviewed pedal, authentic article, true bypass, an extra switch

Cadine Pure Sky Od

cost: $29.99
benefit: sounds like, or very close to, a $129 Timmy pedal, true bypass, readily available

So what are you paying $100 more for? An extra switch, authenticity, possible moral consideration for the creator of the pedal.

What are you not getting for the extra $100? A pedal that is better built... there's no direct evidence or reason to believe the the Cadine is of inferior construction to the Timmy. A pedal that sounds better? Sound is subjective. I have a Pure Sky and it sounds pretty awesome in my not so useful opinion.

Now what happens when you try to buy a US made pedal for $30... what does that afford you?

Re: Gibson Trademarks 335 Shape

you're paying $100 more for basic human work standards, living wages, not sending money to a place that racks up human rights violations like 10s on Skeeball, components that are definitely the advertised ratings instead of most likely such...What else..

Not sending money to a country that has zero qualms in grinding up their biome for profit. Also a country that has no regulations on cost cutting when exporting, like when they figured out a chemical needed for a particular medicine they were contracted to make was in human hair as well as whatever hair/cell they were using, so the local governments enforced policies on collecting hair clippings from local barber shops to dump into our pills.

...but you know, it doesn't matter anyway. They're the perfect machine for our wants and urges.

Also off-topic, ain't it.

I was going to look up my citation on the human hair thing but found this one instead. Pills containing dead babies. Awesome.

I hope Gibson takes a bite out of their own profits by trying to force their will on this.

You're also paying the person that came up with the design.

But they don't deserve any money for their innovation, eh?

Oh, now I'm not a troll... OK then.

I wonder how much of the stuff around your house says "Made in China" somewhere on it, or how much of your "assembled in Ohio" car is made of parts sourced from China? It seem that this high minded morality and consumer activism suddenly becomes a lot more prominent when dealing with guitar gear.

That's a whole can of worms; you'd have to figure out how much of the innovation is "original" versus borrowed, re-purposed or outright copied, and then figure out how to assign fair compensation for their contribution to the end result. Many/most of the circuits and designs don't have patents, presumably because it would be impossible to prove they qualify for one.

Re: Gibson Trademarks 335 Shape

You're so completely set in your ways that I don't see any point in debating anything with you. I'll probably get suckered into another one because of your ludicrous and outlandish views and your way of presenting them, but know that you serve no purpose here other than to attempt to make people feel bad about what they spend their money on.
