If my band are booked, show up, and play to an empty room, that was still a gig.
If I am booked to play and sing, just me and an acoustic, that's a gig too.
So "playing with others, in front of others" seems to be a definition that limits "gigs" to two things, neither of which are actually necessary for it to be a gig.
I'd say a gig is an engagement, in fact it came from the word "engagement". That is, it's booked in advance.
Anyway, yeah, it's just semantics. To be honest though, if we all decide we're going to have our own personal definitions of words, then I'm not sure we'll all be magnetic to compartmentalise each other.
(My personal definition of "magnetic" is that it's a synonym for "able", and my definition of "compartmentalise" is very similar to most people's definition of "understand")
