funny guy. you describe a gig, then... Playing with others, in front of others. That's a gig.

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

I wanted to prove I would be right in fearing damage and so I did ;)

This really makes no sense. To prove to her that your guitar would get damaged you did lent them out? This is like hitting yourself in the face with a hammer to prove to her that it would hurt. Makes no sense why you would be motivated to prove such a thing.

About the gig vs jam discussion. I don't know about you, but what is a gig, really? Playing with others (drums and bass), in front of an audience. And that's exactly what happened, so… gig.

So by your definition since I got a speeding ticket in Indianapolis that makes me a race car driver?

You own 40 guitars including that some that could be considered "beaters" and you choose to take these 2... hrmmmmm okaay.

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

I do know the list of people to whom I would lend a guitar under any circumstance is very short indeed.

I would lend you one of my weirdo backwards guitars if you asked nice.

I would sit and stare at you with "Chancellor Gowron" face the entire time though.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Your definition of a gig is a bit looser than mine. A jam session where anybody can show up with a guitar and play if they want to isn't really a gig. By that definition, if a couple friends show up at my band's rehearsal space and have a few beers while we run through our set, it becomes a gig. I don't see it that way.

To me, a gig is a situation where a specific artist is scheduled to perform at a venue - be it a band or a solo gig or whatever - and it is promoted as such. In that situation, there is a clearer demarcation between performer and audience. I show up to play. You show up to watch me play. Then I sell you a CD and a T-shirt, take my cut from the venue, pack up, and go. That's a gig.

If you want to go by your own definition, that's fine with me. I don't mind. The bottom line is that playing with other musicians is awesome, and playing with other musicians in front of people is more awesome, however you define it... But I would note that my version of the word is probably a lot closer to what most other people would assume you're talking about when you say you played a gig somewhere.

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

I parted with the guitar for a moment and the guy playing it was amazed. Not just how easy the guitar plays (that's just my doing!) but at how easy it was to coax his own sound with the guitar. The more I play them the more I am convinced these pickups are not snakeoil but the beesknees....

I did borrow out the guitar. I did get it back. And my fears were confirmed. I got it back with a broken jack, covered in blood.

So the guy was amazed by the Zephyrs ? If a guy handed me a back a broken guitar covered in blood I don't think I'd be interested in or have much respect for his opinion of the sound. And you did this to prove a point ? Were you pleased ?

I never said it's a gig for a billion people or in a stadium or something. Just, a gig. You (guys) turn it into a huge venue. it's just playing with guys, in front of other guys. and why should I have brought along a beater? I like these guitars, they play well and I see no reason why not to bring them. 'these boots were made for walkin', right? why don't you give us your definition of a gig? playing in front of 100 people? 1000? 10000?

and sure, maybe I picked up the hammer and beat myself with it, but isn't that the whole point of 'proving ones point'?

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

I wouldn't have asked to borrow one of Orpheo's guitars because I wouldn't want to deal with the issues and drama that would be sure to follow...

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

gig=job=$

If you don't get paid then it's not a gig.

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

I Disagree with your definition. Upcoming bands withoiy merchandise and who dont get paid don't have a gig, just a cosy gettogether with an audience that happens to be there? Perhaps my choice of words wasnt so good but gig is faster than "10 guys who come together every 4 weeks to play on a rotating schedule improvised music with an audience that comes specifically to hear them play said improvised music". I am more inclined to name your definition a concert. But it's just semantics now.:)

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

It's not MY definition, it's Webster's.

: a job usually for a specified time; especially : an entertainer's engagement

Nothing about that definition suggests a requirement to get paid.

This sounds more like a gig than the way I understood you before. At this point I agree the differences are mostly semantic.

This is not true you can still gig and not get paid it happens every day. But yes there is a difference between a gig and a Jam session. I consider a Gig a organized show that is planned out with set artist. A jam session is not that.

When you say a gig it means there is a date set and a specific artist is suppose to play to an audience doesnt matter the size. Random dudes with no gear showing up is a jam session not a gig spin it anyway you want but its still basically an open mic night.

Some points arent worth proving this is like the time in high school that my friend wanted to prove to me that he could drive across town in his dads new beemer only using 5th gear. 3k in clutch repairs later he made his point alright same here yeah you sure made your point I'm sure she is really bowled over by it. Not a point worth making.

I've been known to make the Chancellor Gowron Face from time to time.....but it's the EYES that freak my wife out!

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

If my band are booked, show up, and play to an empty room, that was still a gig.

If I am booked to play and sing, just me and an acoustic, that's a gig too.

So "playing with others, in front of others" seems to be a definition that limits "gigs" to two things, neither of which are actually necessary for it to be a gig.

I'd say a gig is an engagement, in fact it came from the word "engagement". That is, it's booked in advance.

Anyway, yeah, it's just semantics. To be honest though, if we all decide we're going to have our own personal definitions of words, then I'm not sure we'll all be magnetic to compartmentalise each other.

(My personal definition of "magnetic" is that it's a synonym for "able", and my definition of "compartmentalise" is very similar to most people's definition of "understand")

Re: Gigged last week with silver zephyr pickup guitars, my feelings about them

Might have missed it in the thread, but was there any video of the said performance?
