god-****. epic fail at a gig.

turned up to play tonight and i was to use an ampeg SVT, rented by the promoter. (not sure of the model, but christ almight it had half a dozen tubes the size of beer glasses in :D)

i arrived, and it's been sitting on standby for quite a while - panel's hot.

anyway, i walk over to it and i've literally taken off my scarf with the gig bag still on when this typical ageing rocker runs over and proceeds to give me a 5 minute lecture on how i shouldn't touch anything because it's a classic amp etc etc etc - fine, whatever, i'm DI-ing and staying near the monitors anyway - it's only a DI link hitting the amp.

i walk round the back of the amp to stash the gig bag and notice something which made me dive for the power and quietly beckon him over from his group of fellow elitist prats..

the cab was plugged into the preamp out. if i'd taken it off standby it would have cooked, and it'd have been my fault - worst thing was, the guy didn't even seem to register the importance of this - i was still a 'f--ing kid'.

god-freakin'-****.

wow. good call dude. good thing people that are older always know more

Re: god-****. epic fail at a gig.

don't get me wrong, i can understand concern at younger guys using nice gear, but jesus - cover your own bases (no pun intended) first!

on a more positive note,

ampeg + 8x10 cab + a new set of flatwounds + awesome sound engineer = one happy bassist :D

Re: god-****. epic fail at a gig.

Oww, that could've been scary! It's ridiculous how it would've been "your fault" if you had flicked the amp off standby... is that how it really works in clubs?

Hey Imp, can I ask for some advice? Should I get a Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 2x10 or a 4x10 to go with my EA Micro 300 head?

Re: god-****. epic fail at a gig.

So if it's on standby it's fine with no speaker plugged in?

Thank god because I accidentally ran my old Traynor on standby for about an hour a few days ago, and the speaker cable had come out.

No, it's the opposite of fine actually dude. Never, ever, ever do it if you value your amp.

That Ampeg might be fine cuz those things are built pretty well but without a speaker load all the amp's power is staying in the amp. Think of how you'd feel after eating a foot-long philly cheese steak except instead of beef it's you know...electricity 'n' stuff.

Definate proof of what guitarists have known for years, that the tone is in the tubes..............
LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Re: god-****. epic fail at a gig.

With the whole no speaker plugged in thing. A few times one of the speaker connecters came out (the ones on the actual speaker either negative or positive) and I turned on the amp couldn't get a sound out of it so checked the back went '****' turned it off and plugged it back in and its worked fine ever since is this because part of the circuit was still plugged in meaning the amp was still seeing a load?
