Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

Re: Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

^ switching from direct-mount P90s to mini-humbuckers isn't a simple process though, you'll need rings and possibly some other bits and pieces, depending on how you do it.

i'd get a few magnets and look at doing a shielding job on what you've got first though, before doing anything drastic.

Not a lot of fans of mini-HB's, and look how few guitars have them (much less than P-90's). TYhey don't have that warm HB sound, or that clear, open P-90 sound. Kind of a middle ground few guys want.

Re: Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

Man , you guys can get wound up when you need to , this is great info except I am not sure what Blueman means when he says, get another and then another, are you talking guitars of wives ? OK here it is , I just recently got into electric and then I wanted another one and now it seems I may be headed for two. I think the general concensus is that P 90's are the thing but also remember that I have to want them. Time to search them out and try them. I also know I don't want to try to swap the P 90's out for mini Humbuckers, that is not the way I was looking. It is P90's all the way and if I get HB then I can play around with them if I feel the need.

Thanks Guys, too bad the United Nations didn't have a forum like this, imagine what they could get done.

Re: Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

I was just suggesting the mini hb's as an option. You ultimately have to WANT what you end up with. I hope you find exactly what you are looking for and that it sounds exactly the way you want it to.

For me, that takes more than one guitar!

Re: Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

Hay Jeff, I know and thanks, I did go and check them out on line but I think that if I go with Humbuckers then I would get a guitar that starts out with them but it is good to know that I can change to something if I got the P 90's and didn't like them .

OK Blueman, I got enough going now but when the dust settles on this, I will be back at you asking about this changing magnets and stuff. That shoud be interesting.

Thanks

Re: minihumbuckers...

I just happen to love 'em. The ones Gibson put in their Firebird V are very sparkly and different sounding than just about any other pup I've heard. But they sound great. I've got that guitar tuned to a modified open 'G' and mainly use it to play Stones.

The mini that comes in the '66 Wilshire is a different beast altogether. It is just about better at everything than any other pup. It has the brightness and clarity and midrange of a good P-90, the warmth and sweetness of an A2 humbucker, and with the vol turned up it has grit, sizzle, rudeness, and bite. I'm loving the agressiveness of this pup, but really amazed at how warm and smooth the neck pup can sound.

I use this guitar (with the minis) to play anything from classic rock to heavy rock to some metal (using a mesa rect) to soft rock and blues. It does it all.....and very well!

I imagine there are some minis out there that are pretty bland and don't really do anything very well, but these NY minis in the Wilshire are phenomenal! Don't pass them off if you haven't tried them.

Good one Doc, I was waiting for you to have a climax. I guess you really like them. By the sound of this , Pickups are like colours, it mainly depends on the person and the mood. Boys my learning curve has gone way up and Doc, I hope you are protected when you play that thing :)

Yeh, I know, I got a little excited there.

I admit, it certainly comes down to personal preference. I very well could be in the minority here. But I'm a minority in heaven.

Re: Godin LG P-90 Upgrade

I know what you mean Doc, like Bob Seger said " illusions without freedom never quite add up to bliss" . We live in free countries, so go for it.
