Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

I don't really feel comfortable carrying close to a grand with me alone if I play it tonight. If I can get my dad to go with me he can write a check and I'll pay him back. If I go this weekend with my dad or a friend I'll bring cash.

If I do go alone tonight though, no cash, bank's closed anyway. He'll just have to be patient and I'll have to pray he doesn't sell it to someone else.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Even better.....walk away with the "I'll think about it" unimpressed look & see if he budges (if it's worth it).

How far away are you from him?

I assume you're not 18, so I'd bring someone else anyway.........you never know :bigthumb:

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

I'm probably about a half hour from him. (Sebastian to Palm Bay)

I'm gonna give him the "Give me the night to think about it" and I'm gonna do that regardless of what price he throws at me. It probably wont sell over night. That'll also gimme a chance to research it a little more overnight. Gonna bring a camera too.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Gonna bring a camera too.

That'd be a little odd...

I gotta think about it... lemme take a picture?

Even if it IS a 900 & 4x12 cab... $900 for a half-stack is a good deal.

I'd bring $800 cash & offer it... he might bite.

That's what I was thinking, but if he's under 18 & by himself, I understand not wanting to bring cash.

You could always leave the money in the car too........

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Or leave the 8 crisp new $100 bills folded in your back pocket...

Nobodies the wiser.

I've used the "gotta think about it line" a few times and it's backfired maybe 50% of the time.

Item gets sold, guy flakes out... or worse... decides to find out what his stuff is REALLY worth.

Last time that happened I could've had some '70s era DBX compressors for I think it was $700. Worth about double... I wanted to let him stew & maybe save a few bucks.

The next day the guy said he had stopped by Rogue music in NYC and they offered him a $1000... wanted me to match it...

Which I did...

:grumble:

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Also, I have been told that at some point in the mid 80s (after 86 I believe) they went with a smaller, cheaper OT for the 2203s and changed or reduced the number of filter caps. These amps are NOT as desirable as the earlier ones as they don't have the "balls" due to the OT and filter cap change. Do some research to be sure but I'm fairly certain the OT and caps changed and as a result they don't sound the same as the earlier models. Either way a 2203 half stack for $900 sounds pretty suspicious.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

So...I gave the guy a call and set up a time to see it tomorrow. I may come back with an 800. We'll see.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Before I pull the plug on this and spend most of my savings...

Is this going to be much of an investment if it is a 1990 model? Would I be better off passing on this one or buying something like a Peavey Windsor or nicer peavey?

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Oh no, I'm having second thoughtssss. Bad. Oh well, I'll find out tomorrow afternoon if its worth the $900.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

I can't really add to what has been said, as far as what to look for......make sure there are no "unused" holes in the rear (signs of some hack adding an fx loop, master volume or someother crap).

Seriously, if it's an 800, it's in good working order, and it doesn't blow up putting it through it's paces... $900 for a half stack ain't a bad deal.

Personally, I'd prefer a 2204- but that's just me...

Keep in mind some people have no idea what they've bought, or even really remember when they bought them.

I know of a dude who bought a guitar under the impression that it had belonged to somebody somewhat "famous" because the guy told the buyer that based on some stencils on the case and damage to the guitar...

:D

Yeah this guy said that only 2 people had played it or some b.s. like that. I think he meant 2 people since he got it, as it was in storage so I don't think he played it much.

He said one was a good friend of his and the other was Pat Travers. Now I know Travers did a gig here in the past year or two, maybe they jammed or something? Oh well.

I'm really excited to see it and play it.

The stock market is a good investment...

Get 'yerself a money market account.

I'd rather have a used $900 marshall then a new $900 PV.

Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, if it's an 800 & it isn't for you, you'll get your money back off it :bigthumb:

Oh, and from what I heard...that guy didn't believe a word of the "famous" guitar story; he just traded for a killer guitar.

Atleast that's my....errrr, uhh....HIS story !!! :D

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

So, I played the 800 and I dunno, I thought it sounded cool and all, but I came home and played my Peavey C30 and can honestly say the 800 wasn't really better. Different, but not really better. I dunno guys...The guy wants 900 firm.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Well....

Which model was it?!?

Condition? Year?

Tell us mang!!!

Geezz... all that build up & suspense for nutthin!

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

It is a Y serial number, so a 1990. A 2203. Very nice looking condition. It was fun to play but it didn't jump out at me and say "buy me!"

Man o man is that thing loud. I had it up to 4 in the guys living room and it was close to ear splitting. I found it to be kind of harsh in the upper mids and not really clear as I would like for lead. Maybe this was because I had a DS1 plugging in to it. It did give a great early Metallica thrash sound with my DS1 through it.

One thing that bothered me is I kinda thought it cut out a couple times. I stop playing for a minute and tweaked some knobs, I started to play again and it took a second to come back full volume. I'm thinking it may be a dirty pot but I dunno if it is more serious.

I'm still undecided on this one guys. I told him I'd call him tomorrow afternoon with my decision. I'm kinda thinking I should hold out for an earlier, more desirable model or maybe this isn't the right amp for me.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

2203 is the 50 watt single channel right?

My 2205 doesn't generate much more volume past four on the master... gets a little more "intense" with a tonal & feel change... but it's basically got 2 or 3 levels.

Crappy. Loud. Louder.

Even if you end up not keeping it you'd stand to make a few bucks...

Cutting out slightly? It might be due for power tubes... might be nothing other then dust mites if the guy hasn't really used it.

The cab alone is an easy $400. $500 for an 800 of any style & 'working' condition is a bargain IMO.
