Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

2203 is the 50 watt single channel right?

My 2205 doesn't generate much more volume past four on the master... gets a little more "intense" with a tonal & feel change... but it's basically got 2 or 3 levels.

Crappy. Loud. Louder.

Even if you end up not keeping it you'd stand to make a few bucks...

Cutting out slightly? It might be due for power tubes... might be nothing other then dust mites if the guy hasn't really used it.

The cab alone is an easy $400. $500 for an 800 of any style & 'working' condition is a bargain IMO.

2203 is the 100 watt.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Well, you guys all say that an 800 in working condition is a good deal for $900. Well, what could possibly be wrong or go wrong with it and what would it cost for repairs? He says the tubes are new. The cab is not original. The cab is a year or two old. Its a 1960a. Cab is included in the $900.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

I say if it doesn't work for you, don't get it. Plain and simple. There's nothing saying you have to get it no matter how good the deal is. It obviously isn't giving you the warm fuzzies all over or you would have it in your possession. Pass on it and look for something that does work for you.

See, the thing is, I like the sound of it. This is the amp I've been looking for. I'm just unsure about spending $900 on anything. It's paranoia really. I just need to make a decision.

My only real concern is that something could be wrong with it. I don't know enough about the amps to know what to look for. I guess if its running and it sounds right its okay?

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Just looked it up on MF and wow a 1960a cab is $800 new. Hmmm, would most likely be a big upgrade over my behringer cab and it is 4 and 16 ohms so it could take my C30 too. Cool!!!

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Is it the amp you've been looking for? Does it give you your sound? I know darn well it'll give me my sound because I've played through enough of them. They are friggin loud though...LOL. An attenuator is a MUST have with those.

If you get it, take it to a tech for a checkup. If anything, you'll be out the bench fee which can be $35 to $55 depending on the tech, at least around here that's the range. The cutting out could be a dirty pot, simple issue to take care of.

$900 for ANY half stack is a killer deal, especially for that amp. You wouldn't be wasting your money. It is your decision though. Sleep on it and go from there.

Yep, gonna sleep on it. This is THE amp for my sound. If I funk up and regret buying it, I can always sell it. Thanks for all your help guys.

We all gotta learn sometime...

Otherwise, we wouldn't be human.

Or enjoy tone.

Tone & sound aren't the same BTW.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

I would wait for an early 80's JCM 800. Don't buy something that you are not absolutely in love with.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

TYPICALLY....if there's a red flag, I'd say walk away & don't look back.

BUT, you could keep the cab (admitted upgrade) & sell the amp on Ebay & probably make a few bucks....or throw it up for trade offers.

That was MY PLAN if it was an 80s 800 like he initially claimed to me. :D

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Going to tell him, "Thanks for the opportunity to come try it out but I'm not going to purchase it. I thought it was an 1982 model and I was really looking for something closer to that year. Its a beautiful amp and I wish you luck selling it."

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

Decision made. </thread>

Discuss if you'd like.

I'm going to go play a Peavey Windsor today.

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

And there ya' go !

Probably made the right choice.....get something you like & have no regrets !!!! :beerchug:

Re: Going to look at a JCM800 tomorrow

And if he questions the year thing, tell him you looked up the serial number yourself and Y at the beginning = 1990. ;) Be nice about it so that it'll help him sell it more honestly.
