Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

Punk Rock isn't about about what guitar you play. It is about how you play it. Attitude is all. Check out Ron Asheton.

I agree, and I know how to rock to vintage punk pretty well... I just wouldn't feel right doing it on a prs. I want something that I can beat on like crazy.

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

The most punk rock option is to beat up your PRS.

The strat idea is cool but i dunno. To me the best punk tones are from Les Pauls with PAFs or P90's...and I am the most punk rock person on this forum.

He has a point there. lol

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

Isn't anyone gonna recommend a Mostrite? It was the sound of the Ramones since day one.

I know, but the acrylic finish just won't die, lol. The neck on it is starting to wear out because it's nitro, but blue flame maple with a natural binding doesn't say punk rock, unless I would purposefully beat it with a chain. (which would probably make EP very happy, but is not something I want to do, lol)

You were. Until you've started working at a big music store and defending a big guitar corporation like Gibson... :D

Punk or corporate whore - I still love you bro (in a totally non gay way... well... you know...). :friday::friday:

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

I'm all for the Tele, they get you a good punchy sound for punk. If you go hotrails, put a split on it so you can still get single coil tones.

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

The Melody Maker but with a lil 59 as opposed to the Hot Rails. The Hot Rails sounds too squashed, that's what I have set up for son's MM and it sounds good but it just sounds too modern rock for my tastes. You could always go with a Dimarzio FS-1 in there too if you really like Johnny's sound but I think you'd have a little more versatility with the lil 59.

It'll take a little work with a Roto-Zip or whatnot to fit a Strat pup in the MM but it is pretty easy to do.

***and I was a Punk before EP was even born:nana:***

As much as a Melody Maker or LP Jr. looks punk rock, I worry about their durability. Strat or Tele with a Lil 59 (or a real 59) FTW, based on indestuctibleness.

Durability? Well unless you snap the 'stock off, which granted I did to my fave Jr. many moons ago you shouldn't have any real issues. Christ Cheetah CHrome used his MM for ages and if Johnny Blunders could keep his main Jr intact I would think Phil would be OK. Hey listen you grab my ESP Eclipse I'll even throw the Steve Jones decals back on for ya.

No Mosrites, way too much hank ($$$$) for one of those these days.

...*thinks back to punk rock 101...kicks over a trash can, smashes a beer bottle in the street, then yells 'ANARCHY IN THE U.K. MOTHER****ER!'*

...*is redeemed*

And yeah those Melody Makers are punk as fuh...even the stock gibson pickup is really hot so you can push amps into OD fairly easily with it...

Punk rock has always been about rebellion from the norm and self-expression...thereby, playing a traditionally non-punk instrument makes you even more punk.

Tim from Rancid comes from mind, with all those Gretsch hollowbodies.

...
- Take a MIM strat body I have, strap on the 50s classic player's neck I have laying around, get a new guard, and throw in the Duncan Designed "Distortion" bridge I have.

Great answer. There are so many different kinds of guitars which have been used by punk guitarists over the decades. Just not PRS.

I agree this thread, this thread is hilarious. Most guys that play punk really can't play guitar worth **** and probably didn't really even think a whole lot about what instrument they play. It's not until the early 90's late 80's that punk really started to get hi fi, before that it sounded for the most part like they grabbed whatever guitar they had or felt comfortable, and played it through whatever amp was available. Pretty sure they didn't go into kisekae and get a couple mock ups going.

of course it's not about generating some calculated, formulaic sound. But, anyone has the legitimate right to plan what guitar they wanna use. Picking up a beater guitar at random or settling for a POS just because that's what some famous artist happened to do is as whack as blindly taking any forum suggestion without giving it proper thought.

yeah you can play punk rock with a crap guitar. Maybe it's more fun if you picked the guitar you wanted.

I think you're missing the point man. You mentioned they played what ever guitar feels comfortable. I don't feel comfortable punching out power chords on the PRS. Now, you mentioned that over the decades people have been using different guitars, but like all genres, we now associate a typical style to it. Therefore, some guitars are better suited than others for the style. You can in theory play any song on any guitar, but some will yield better results. This is specially important if you are trying to pay tribute to someone by covering their songs.

What's wrong with a Kisake mockup? I have parts and I want to know how they will look when fit together. I get what you are saying, but I think you are missing the point. I'm not going to start a social and musical revolution... just trying to get a guitar that will sound nasty, and wondering what the results will be.

Re: Gonna need a guitar for punk music...

plenty of great guitars mentioned... the LP Jr's and Melody Makers would be cool.... also some Grestch guitars would fit the bill too in my Mind...

for some reason i would think some of the TV Jones kind of Pickups would work great playing punk thru a loud Marshall type of amp...

in any case Punk could be played on just about any guitar... why the hell not...
