good cheap half stack for metal

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Randall is a real good bet for your price range. I got my Randall RG100T tube head and Peavey 4x12 cab for $500. And its lead tone smokes my buddies Mesa Single Recto.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

I saw a Peavey Butcher head and 4x12 for $350 on Craigslist. Do some searches man, sweet stuff is out there.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

i'm liking the peavey and randall suggestions. for peavey i'm thinking the ultra and maybe a used 5150. for randall i say the rh100g3?

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

and for theose people who tell me that its immature and retarded, i agree. its more about tone than looks. but the drummer is the only one complaining about it, i guess he's stubborn. i have tried making a band but those who have the chops needed i can't get along with. or their amps are 30W and i can't find a drummer, their all taken. maybe you're right and i shouldn't join this band, but the lead guitarist is my friend and teacher for a year.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

I know where you're coming from with this and I'm also a firm believer in using the right gear for the job, but when you phrase it like that it sounds bad.
Doesn't matter; it's still true, believe me.

Most things that are true sound bad when you hear 'em straight.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

not sure if your into ebay, but search these suggestions in there and you will see how much they can be had for.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

yeah i cheacked and saw some really good prices, especially for the randalls.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

get a old randall RG series.

Gotta bump this idea, for metal the older randall RG series kill. I still have the 100 watt RG head and matching cab that I got for christmas in the mid 80's. Although it's no longer my main amp it gets some really sick sounds. Especially if you push the frone end a bit and add in a EQ

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Dude wait a minute...you just need a half stack? put your Frontman on top of your FM, turn it up until the treble makes their ears bleed, and just rawk out. That'll learn 'em.

Or you could just get a cheap 4x12 and a Valve Jr. head...you won't need a clean tone anyway so just leave the volume up all the way and shreddd. Be the evilest 5 watts in your high school thats for sure.

Not to me mean, but I'm going to shoot you down there.

Using a 5 watt vintage voiced amp probably isn't the best idea for metal, even if you have a killer pedal.

I'm still going to swear up and down that you're best off going solid state with the older randalls. You'll be shocked at how good they actually sound.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

i would man, but i need to get the money first. :smack: i'll get the money in four months though. i just need to know what kind of amp i can get under $650. don't feel like this is a waste of time though. they are giving me until August but i'll get it by April.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

This isn't a recommendation, just a thought. Zakk Wylde (Ozzy and Black Label Society) and Wayne Static of Static X, have been known to use Marshall MG's (solid state). I don't know if those guys are of any interest to you, and i have to admit I don't think I've ever heard Static X, but then I'm old. Oh yeah, and Dimebag used solid states now and then.

I thought zakk used jcm 800's. I know john 5 (?) uses mg series solidstate.

On this note, I will say that the fender fm beat the marshall mg when i compared the two.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

i thought he used jcm800 too. well i do like Zakk, but havent heard Static X that much. i think i'm going to go for randall rg, unless someone could convince me to go for peavey. i heard some randall recordings and i thought they were bad ass.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Well Zakk is quoted on Marshall's website as saying "The MG sounds totally slamming, the overdrive is crushing." So I thought that he probably used them.

That quote is about the MG Microstack that he uses backstage or on the bus for practicing. If you see the ad or check out the videos on the Marshall site you'll know what I mean I think.

As for the original question, I would say an older Randall is a really great idea. I had the Randall RG100SC 100 watt 2x12 combo with chorus, and it was amazing. A few months later, a friend of mine and now second guitarist in our band bought the same combo, except the RG series was G2 when he bought his. We both found that my combo sounded better than his and was louder. It seems to me that Randall has let their solid state stuff slip a lot, and are focusing on their tube products now.

So, definitely take a look out for the older RG series, and avoid G2 or G3 like the plague. If you don't go Randall, look into Peavey because the 5150 and XXX are both amazing heads, and in that case if you want a clean channel that actually sounds good grab the XXX.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Peavey Windsor all-tube 120 watt head is like $400...if you looked long enough you could probably find a cabinet to put under it.

Not to mention all the older Peavey heads that kick ass yet nobody gives any love: Butcher, VTM60/120...you'll be way happier if you get yourself some tubes.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Just about any of the Crate half-stacks can do metal, honestly, as well as almost any other half-stack if you use the right distortion pedal in front. Just my 2 cents: go play a bunch.
