Good Compressor Pedal.

Re: Good Compressor Pedal.

;)
Well not so great for cleans then hehe....
Compression is just not compression guys, amps natural compression, that gives tha saturated sound, then there is the one that works like a limiter, makes the level only goes as far as the threshold allows it!
Then there is the compression for even levels, making chords and harptones stand out equally...so there is no best, only what works for the given outfit and setup.

Re: Good Compressor Pedal.

I agree that tube compression rocks, but let's assume for the moment that smashed39 can't get the compression right from his amp, or that he wants to be able to turn it on or off with the click of a button -- hence the question, "What's a good compressor pedal."

Different compressors have different personalities. Seems like they shouldn't, since they're all supposed to perform the same basic function, but they do nonetheless. David Gilmour, a fellow who probably knows a thing or two about effects, likes to keep three different compressors on his board.

I've got two compressors I love but use for different purposes: a Boss CS-2 (note that this is not the CS-3 everyone's complaining about, but the more vintage version), and an Analog Man Bi-CompROSSor (as someone said, two compressors in one).

Speaking of the axe god himself, if I'm going for a Gilmour-esque tone, I'll always reach for the Boss CS-2. It's fat and smooth, perfect for that (mostly) clean "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" tone. For something that's got less fat and more spank, I go for the Bi-Comp. I've played with each side of this pedal to know that...ehh...I'm not sure which side I like better. :) It is, or at least can be, a more subtle compressor in general, but crank up the sustain enough on the Ross side and you're in Squish City, population: you. That was a silly phrase, but I'll leave it in there.

I haven't tried the MXR DynaComp, but I've heard great things about it.

The bottom line is this: What are your applications and how much are you willing to spend?

Hope this helps.
