Good phaser?

The other type of pedal I'm looking at buying in the next few months is a phaser. Right now the main contender is an MXR Phase 90, any others I should look into or any reasons to stay away from that one?

Re: Good phaser?

i've got a phase 90 and absolutely love it. i did the R28 mod to it and now it's just as smooth as can be. i'd say go for it.

Re: Good phaser?

Even though the smallstone and phase 45 and phase 90 don't have depth controls, I still wouldn't own a phaser without one, it greatly limits the medium and higher speed rates, medium speed phasers often sound better on leads than do super slow phasing. The Ph-3 phase shifter by BOSS will do just about anything you ask it to, including the softer vintage stuff, although it's a bit pricey. A used PH-1R off ebay is a great find. It's a four stage phaser like the 90 (the 45 and the dod 201 were two stage phases, very light), and it has more control than the 90 and is quieter with more headroom.

Re: Good phaser?

I love ALL phase shifters...I have or have had a phase 45, phase 90, phase 100, small stone, several boss phasers, a few maestro's, a Foxx Foot Faser, this list goes on...My fav's are the ones I have kept over the years...Phase 100, Small Stone, and my Maestro Mini-Phase...There is NOTHING wrong with a Phase 90! I love em', and I wouldstill have mine...but I was just offered too much money for it, so I kept the phase 100!

Re: Good phaser?

I've recently gone phase crazy and currently have 3 phasers with one on layaway.
I LOVE the old MXR Phase 45. It works really well with chords. It also has a Leslie like vibe when set at higher rates.

My second favorite is the old Small Stone Phase Shifter. NICE phasing!

My least favorite phase is the Dunlop MXR Phase 90 reissue. Compared with my other phasers, it sounds like it's swirling in a tin can. I rarely use this thing due to the major tone suckage. Pun intended.

I also have an EVH Phase 90 on layaway. I played it for about an hour through serveral different amp/guitar setups at my local guitar store, and it has the goods. Nice warm thick phasing. Much nicer than the reissue model. I'm not that hot about the stripes on it, but tone wins over looks.

All this said, I'd suggest you check out the Red Witch Moon Phaser. This unit is getting a lot of praise. Check it out at www.musictoys.com.

Re: Good phaser?

Another vote for the SmallStone. I had russian blackbox, sold it and now waiting for a USA RI.

Re: Good phaser?

The best sounding phase shifter that I've EVER heard was an MXR Phase 100. I don't think they made them any better than that one.

Re: Good phaser?

Phase 90, With my particular setup though, it sounds WAY better through the front of the amp thtn in the FX loop.

Iam also getting an EVH version to check it out. For some reason I just like the phase 90 with one and only one knob.

Re: Good phaser?

Thanks guys, looks like I'll be doing some deal sniping for a Phase 90 in the future...
