got a free 412 cab today

well today i came in to work, and my boss was cleaning out the back of the shop and said he had a cab i could have to mess around with if i wanted. It was originally a bass cab i think, since it is wierdly tall and narrow, and has what i think are holes for tweeters, but since i am swapping the speaker in my crate anyways, i might get a few cheap speakers in the same order and wire up the cab. if anyone has a reccomendations of some decent but cheap speakers, i was thinking jenson ceramic vintage.

The last time I got a free 4x12 I gave it to one of the guitar players in my band.

It was a Road 4x12.

I'm a dumbass.

Free stuff is always cool... (way too cool for me to get any...ever ;))

Just go for the best you can afford... You could get some very nice mix in there with different speakers....

when i moved out of Toronto i gave away a bass 4x12 and a univox 6x12.... i just could not picture myself needing them... of course i want the Univox cab back!

I'm REALLY friggin interested in how that thing'd sound

you should probably get good speakers for it, it could be instrumental in giving you *your* sound

and if not you can just buy an empty cab from avatar later

I just emailed the warehouse guitar speakers guy about shipping prices, hopefully the $59.24 ebay estimate to ship a $21 speaker is an error of some sort. I might get one or two of those, a jensen vintage ceramic, or maybe something else. oh, how do you find the impedance of a speaker? I want to test the speaker that came in the cab, but i only have a tube amp, and i know they dont like impedance mismatches.

yeah, im just hoping I can get at least the shipping rate canada gets, we were a part of the united states last time I checked. thats getting to be barely cheaper than eminence speakers for me.

you need a multimeter or something else that measures resistance. hook up each of the probes to where the wires connect to the speaker. usually a 4-ohm speaker will read 3-4 ohms, 8 will read around 7, etc. i don't think there's any way to measure the impedance of a speaker just using an amp.

i checked it yesterday, but i got like 1.4ish, is it possible that it was a 2ohm speaker? maybe my multimeter is out of batteries.

i dunno...i've never heard of a 2-ohm speaker, so maybe check it again with new batteries in the meter....if it really is 2 ohms, it's gonna be hard to fit it into a cab with other speakers.

ok, turns out that my cheap radioshack multimeter only measures in kilo ohms, AND was out of batteries. so im getting a reading far below one. it looks like im going to have to shell out and buy a nicer one just so i can see what this speaker is.

i guess i wont know till i go to radioshack and get a good multimeter, i intend to do that later today.
