I've heared of Wilco and am interested. Which songs/albums would you recommend.
And wasteofo2 I HEAR YA MAN!!!!!!!!!

Great thing about Wilco is that there is a little something for everyone.

Here's a list of my favorite albums:

1) Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: A Masterpiece, on the album Tweedy is starting to breakaway for from his Alt Country roots and starts to experiment with stronger arrangements and song writing.

2) Summerteeth: Wilco's version of Pet Sounds. Big and Lush with again great song writing with a great mixture of Guitar feedback and country twang.

3) A Ghost is Born: A very progressive album, that showcases Jeff Tweedy as a great guitarist (Jay Bennet is no longer in the band). You can definitly hear Tweedy's more avantgard influences like Sonic Youth on the album. Also Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Loose Fur) is a major contributer on the album.

4) AM: Great country twang soaked album. Not the best but great to just "kick it" to.

5)Being There: My least favorite, but a good album with some nice ballads and long jams.

6)Australian EP: This was a free EP that was available off Wilco's website. Some early versions of some tunes off A Ghost is Born and YHF.

If you like what you hear check some of these other bands:

Uncle Tupelo: Tweedy's First band. Good Alt country stuff.
Son Volt: The other Half of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar.
Loose Fur: EP with tweedy and Jim O'Rourke. Very Avantgard stuff.
Minus 5/Down with Wilco Album: A collaberation with Wilco, Peter Buck and others.
Billy Bragg and Wilco/Mermaid Ave I & II: Wilco and Bragg doing Woody Gutherie covers.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

fusion is really tight, but you gotta know who your artists are, my uncle knows them and I try to remember.

also my all time favorite song is machine gun by jimi hendrix live @ filmore east, but not the one that's on the album, it's from the other show he did at filmore east. it's about 14 minutes long and the song's climax is like 4 minutes long just before the end.

If it starts out like ".......soldiers in vietnam, milwaukee....oh yeah and vietnam" then it's NOT the performance I'm suggesting.

Ditto!

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Loads of good stuff mentioned here:

Meshuggah
Don Cabbalero
Boards of Canada
Ima Robot
Aphex Twin
Etc...

My recommendations:
ANYTHING on Warp Records (home of Boards of Canada & Aphex Twin, crazy electronic label) - gotta check out Squarepusher, in particular the song Do You Know Squarepusher?, some good beat manipulating going on there!
Mastodon are good in the metal vein, not so weird that it's not accessable though
King Crimson, nice proggy wierdness, crazy sounds
Karate, chilled jazzy vibe
Botch, lo-fi hardcore
I'll stop now...

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Dead Can Dance - Ethnic fusion with incredible vocalists
Mahavishnu Orchestra - experimental jazz fusion, you probably already know them
Dillinger Escape Plan - Math-noise-metal-core? A very influential and technical band
Meshuggah - this band is all about weird time signatures, instruments playing in different time signatures, etc. there's more to them than that though
Failure - 90s post grunge art rock. Some of the weirdest lyrics you'll ever find
Mr. Bungle - Sort of like a modern Frank Zappa, very experimental
Five O'Clock Shadow - All a-capella pop rock group
Gonzalo Silva - Very talented bassist who does a lot of interested chordings and great bass stuff along with catchy pop vocals and funky latin rock drums
The Mars Volta - Great band. Progressive rock.
Opeth - You probably know, Progressive death metal
Porcupine Tree - Progressive rock, once of my favorite bands. Really awesome
VAST - Another of my favorite bands, see my signature
Einsturzende Neübauten - German industrial band. Cool stuff

I second Sonic Youth. Check out The Pixies.
Dude, I'm seeing the Pixies at a venue 3 hours away from my house next weekend.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

That's two for Meshuggah and Don Cabbalero as well... very different bands though.:)

It's hard to get into sonic youth because they changed a lot in the early 90's and then again in the mid to late 90's.... you can't get a good sense of them from just one or two albums.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Another vote for Meshuggah!

Also Buckethead. Pretty much all of his albums are different. Here are his best:

Population Override - Bluesy Jazzy Funky, awesome guitar.
Cuckoo Clocks of Hell - Heavy-ish, but someone who doesn't like heavy might still like it.
Bucketheadland 2 - This describes Buckethead: weird.
Electric Tears - Hmm...modal jazz?

The rest of his albums are pretty good, but those stand out.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Spiral Architect - 'A Sceptic's Universe'(link to samples)

...Prog/Metal. ..The first listen may tie your brain in a knot, with so much going on from the whole band. ..But after multiple spins the knot should loosen for you. ..I don't know how this cd could be boring or uninteresting.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Ah.... I've never seen so much indie and emo mentioned on here... AH!

oh.... I've got a few.
Thursday - War all the Time
Bright Eyes - Fevers & Mirrors
At The Drive In - The Relationship of Command
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island and (differant album) In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
M. Ward - Duet For Guitars No. 2
anything by Amy X

those are my few cents. Bubye.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

I suggest the following:

Big Black - 80's noise filled hate from steve albini
Public Image LTD. - Johnny Rotten's seminal post Pistols band
Gang of Four - See who Franz Ferdinand ripped off, poorly
