Got JTM45 GAS again..........

I had major GAS for a JTM45 a few years ago, but could never afford 1 (I didn't have a full time job at the time).

Someone on another forum I go on is getting a Ceriatone clone/kit of a JTM45 and it's re-ignited my JTM GAS :banghead:

I hear that the Re-issue JTM45s need a fair bit of work doing to them to make them sound anything like the old 1's did, but if I could pick 1 up cheap enough then it could be an option.

Another option would be a Celtic Edana, which I've always liked the look of, and most of the sound clips I've heard from 1 have been great. But they're made in good Ol' Texas by our friend Scott_F and I'm in England, so I'm not too sure how much of an option they are.

This thread doesn't really have a point, but I'm bored at work so thought I'd make a post about my latest gear related 'inner turmoil' :D

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

A few months back I tried a Ceriatone JTM-45 and was very impressed...I mean he doesn't use loads of fancy parts and he doesn't have some big name behind him, he can brag that his stuff is "MADE IN THE USA!" and such but the quality of the amp in both build and tone was out of this world! I give his work 2 thumbs WAY up!

The amp I tried was not a kit form amp it was built by Nik at Ceriatone and shipped out, the guy that has it ordered it with a master volume and was running KT66's in it when I tried it. He had it in a Mojo head can and was running a 2x12 Bluesbreaker style cab from Avatar with a pair of G12H30's and I have to be honest it sounded great. IMO Nik builds an amp that sounds as good as amps that cost twice as much (or more!)

If you want to go sraight to the top (w/o spending the massive money an original JTM-45 woudl cost you) get a Germino...Im telling you those are as good (and better in a lot of cases) than the old Marshalls plus they are new and don't need loads of work and money to sound good again.

Another good JTM-45 Reinhardt Sentinel. Bob Reinhardt makes a great amp and has really nailed the old vibe with a few modern tweaks. Also, if you don't have to have a straight clone but want that JTM-45 character a Matchless Clubman is a gret option, use they can be had at a decent price, I would suggest you go for the non reverb model as IMO it sounds better.

There are lots if killer JTM-45 clones and JTM-45 insoired amps out there. Good luck with your search!

Im sure I didn't help your GAS by the way!

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Everytime I listen to the Beano album I have JTM-45 GAS!!! : )
What I think is, after tryin' some repros of this amp, I still find easier to emulate early Clapton sounds with a more aggressive kind of amp, than with the Bluesbreaker. With a good 1987x I think you're there.
I've recently listened to a Germino JTM-45 clone: amazing, great amp, but not the Beano sound.
If you're sure about this amp, I suggest you to buy one used in good condition, and then start to "improve" the amp: ptp board and a mercury ouput trans should be fine.

P.S. Did you give the ole Bassman a try? It's my main giggin amp, and I use it when I play with my country-rock band, and when I'm rockin harder too.
I have a video of the bassman played very loud and dirty... for me, the marshall sound, BEFORE marshall amps were avaiable! If it helps, I can give you the link.

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Didn't Clapton goose his amp with a treble booster for the Beano album?

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Yes sir! Dallas Rangemaster, actually. ;)

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Thanks for the posts guys :)

TGWIF, I looked into the amps you mentioned above and while they're kinda outta my price range, they're also not really available over here in England, which is a big problem :(

Arrigus, I'm not really trying to 'nail' any sound, I just love the loud/fat clean/slightly dirty sound of these amps :)

I always hear people comparing JTM45s to Bassmans, but have never used a Bassman myself. A link to your video would be very handy, thanks :)

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

I'm with you Craig. I'm always gassing for a JTM 45 type amp. I quite fancy giving the VintageModern a go as it gets in the ball park, but has modern appointments too.

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

I used to have an original 67/68 50watt small box plexi with a cream back, and a few years ago got so carried away with the nostalgia thing that I got 1 Re-issue in black and one of the LTD white heads. They both looked great, especially the white one, but in the end I let both go 'coz they sounded absolutely nothing like an original! The strange thing was that the black one had 5881 power valves whilst the white one had EL34's, and IMO the black one sounded better. I just found that both were way too bright and harsh even with the treble right down and the presence hardly on. I was so disappointed... then it brought back the pain of realising how I regreted selling my original. If you are going this route I WOULDN'T recommend a M@r54@ll, I'd save for a Celtic or Splawn... Sorry bud.

I've heard similar things myself mate, althought I don't really need all the features of the VM (nor the price tag!) :D

This is 1 of the main opinions I hear about the re-issues: nothing like the original amp!

For my money, either a Celtic or a Ceriatone would be the my best/preferred option, but I'm not overly fond of having to import the amp into the country

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Thanks for the Bassman, I dig that tone :)

I've still never seen a bassman for less than £600 here, so i dunno where to go from here............:?:

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Have tried contacting Scott F about possibilities of importing an Edana so am just waiting for a reply :D

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

I've got a Germino Classic 45 and in my opinion it's a lot closer to a vintage JTM45 than the Marshall reissue. Not much more money than what the Marshall goes for either...

The main problem is that I live in England, and most 'boo-teek' amps are difficult to get over here.

I can get a Marshall RI JTM-45 for about £400 or so, whereas 1 of those Germinos is about $2000 (if I remember correctly), then I'd have to have it shipped over, and then another load of taxes etc ontop of that.

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Dude the VM50W is under 400 pounds... It's a pretty good sounding amp dude! Especially if you like to use your guitar's controls or if you use loads of pedals I'd say.

Got anymore info on this amp mate? WHo makes it? Features etc?

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Marshall Vintage Modern dude ;) It's a mix of a JTM45 but with a very sweet digital reverb (I loved it) and an effects loop I think. There's also a gain boost that's footswitchable and a midboost you can only switch from the front pannel.

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Ah, the Vintage Modern. Sorry mate, it didn't click that you was referring to that amp :D

The amp is more than £400 though isn't it? I'm sure I've seen it at about £700 or there abouts?

I was also under the impression that it was a totally different sounding amp to a JTM-45. Is it really that comparable?

Re: Got JTM45 GAS again..........

Don't know if it helps but the in the Guitarist review, Steve Dawson of Marshall said " If you want to get that classic Bluesbreakers tone, it's there - so is the tone Blackmore had on the early Deep Purple albums."
Guitarist stated, "Steve Dawson is correct. With a PRS McCarty plugged in, dialling up the classic Bluesbreakers tone was almost too easy. If you want classic Blackmore or SRV, look no further."
Sounds good to me!!!

Sounds cool :D

I'm after that 'Fat clean' tone of the JTM45s moreso than the Overdrive potential of them (most gigs I play are too small to crank the amp for OD anyway!)
