Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

I know it's not the same thing but Brobucker was also designed by a committee.

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

As someone recently said to me, that's what happens when you design by committee. I'm really hoping I like the tone of my Crazy 8 in the Kramer.

I was glad to have the opportunity to have some input, I am looking forward to installing them.

True, but the people who pushed for that had something definite in mind as the end goal guiding the decisions. I got the distinct impression this one became about putting as many "off the beaten path" ideas as possible into a pickup and hoping it sticks because there was no vision of what the end result was to be.

I'm not suggesting it shouldn't have been done, I think it was a great idea. I am saying that when that many unproven ideas are put together in one design, you shouldn't be surprised if the results aren't the be all and end all.

well it's not an "unproven" recipe!
It's a JB , a PATB1 and an A8 magnet in one housing.I am really waiting for the one and only 7 string version ahaha:D

And where have you played that combo before?? Like I said. Unproven.

Yeah but many people demonstrates like a big experiment ,wich is not!Everyone who ever tried a PATB knows what thid baby is capable of and how is going to sound!Ofcourse we have to try it out ,but what i hear and read is exactly what i was expacting!

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

As with most things ... some people are going to like it, and others not.
It is also a subjective question depending on what guitar, what amp and whatever else the signal might be running through.

But regardless, isn't it cool that Seymour Duncan as a company is willing to take input from customers ... wind a few ... and make them available?

I think it is pretty awesome.
Few companies these days give their customers that much attention.

You should know that I know that. That's why I was saying "it's not the same thing BUT" ;)... I remember, you and I have been among the vert first people ordering them Brobuckers.

Anyways, I really would have been interested in a PAT3B kinda pickup. But at 13-14 kilo ohms (with #43 wire), my guess that it would sound somewhat bright and cutting was confirmed. That was not something what I wanted. I also have doubts this goes for some people who have purchased this pickup.

Still, producing this pickup was a very cool thing by the Duncan company.

Its very awesome and such a cool thing for SD to do. Some folks seem to be reacting with disbelief that not every last person who hears it isn't soiling themselves and making plans to replace every pickup they have with one. I just think thats a little unrealistic. The Brobucker had a built in audience because there was a design goal in mind. This is different. No one had any idea what the end result was to be, they just assembled options to see what would happen. Because of that, the number of people who are going to be blown away will probably be a lower number than with the Brobucker.

I know you do. It certainly is a cool thing. I have the PATB3 Blues model which is a 10k wind. If you want to try the parallel axis models this is the model to get.

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

This Crazy 8 could be usefull for some , but not for me ; I play with Demon and Jazz with alnico 8 and I like punch but not mud and compression .
The alnico 8 give such a full EQ and added punch that it is not required - for my style - in other than vintage pickup .
The Crazy 8 is probably close from the Custom 8 , and I imagine this one as a dark , slightly muddy , unsubtle pickup : for heavy rock !

Not to be a smartass since I haven't even gotten mine yet but from the posts of everyone that has installed it in their guitars I gather it is anything BUT dark and muddy. I understand it as a bright, very defined pickup.

As said above, for some that's exactly what they need while for others the last pickup they'd put in their guitars on earth...

Personally, I find the reviews to be very encouraging (though I voted against it in a poll or two) for what I want except it appears to be too bright for my Strat, hence I'm looking for ways to fatten it up.

Whatever it turns out to be, I KNOW it'll be a great pickup and I'm sure I will find a use for it somewhere.

In fact, if I had it in my hands right now and diggin' it I'd might even be inclined to get another one from a less than satisfied forumite.
However, let's just first wait how the first one'll be and then see...

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

Being less hot than Custom it could be brighter , even more in floyd guitars ; I play with fixed bridge guitar witch have tons of bottom !

I just throwed my opinion based on my equipment ; it could work in other guitars .

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

By adjusting the volume pot and tone control you can "tame" a bright pickup, but you can't add clarity and definition to a dark muddy pickup. It could be that some folks will like it better with a 250K pot, or an AII magnet.

Re: Got My Crazy 8 Today!!!!

I dont find it dark at all.. has enough chug in the lows, but to me its tonal focus is in Hi mids. Cuts very well, but is not bright/piercing.

I find this as well. it's like a better JB with a little more defined bass.

oh, it chugs like a mofo and the mids and highs are very well defined and cutting but not piercing.

I really like this pickup. I shoulda bought 2 or 3.
