Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Just a general get what you pay for statement, probably not as relating to this thread perhaps. I would expect that his 1500 buck guitar to have None of those problems. Everyone saw MF come out with that price and it was LOWWWWWWWWWWWW in comparison for what those guitars usually go for. When MF does something like that, you can bet they're 2nds. Shame on Gibson for not just making firewood out of them, shame on MF/GC for buying them and screwing the uneducated. I'm sure there's a lot of folks out there that buy and never complain becuase they like the tone. We, here, are a lot more picky. I'd keep sending it back until he gets a good one.

You definitely get what you pay for when you deal with MF. Dealing with a smaller dealer, this would likely never have happened. Yet, this one thread, 50 people will read it and repeat the story, and we get this huge upswell of how Gibson sucks.

How many people got all bent out of shape when Godin shipped me a 25.5 scale guitar body with a 24.75 scale neck. It was unplayable above the 7th fret. but, it's an isolated incident.

let's say that 1% of the guitars made somehow slip past QC or they're 2nds and MF buys them up for nothing. Well, Gibson makes a butt load of guitars. Their 1% is going to be a ton of guitars in comparison with Godin. So, they get a ton of bad press about how Gibson sucks. I see it all the time

He got a dud. Dealing with MF you are far likelier to get a dude IMO. If a deal looks too good to be true, it always is for the most part.

Are Gibsons overpriced? Probably. Just as PRS is and a lot of others. But if they have the tone thats in your head, you'll pay for it. Maybe these days you just have to go custom shop to get the best of the best. That is a shame. But, it's the way it is perhaps when you make millions of guitars a year (perhaps an exageration, but between Gibson and Fender, you're talking about the vast vast majority of guitars made)

Shame on both companies involved. But shame on all the Gibson Sucks people every time a dude is talked about. Just my two cents. fFor 1500, he should have gotten an excellent guitar. No doubt.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

i think i understand your point .. we probably agree more than we disagree

at least we agree that for 1500 he shouldve gotten an excellent guitar

i guess we can leave it to each reader to decide for himself if a company that sells $1500 guitars with that kind of poor QC sucks or not

cheers

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Like Scott said..........he got a dude! Maybe a dude looks like a lady or maybe it's a Dude where's my car? dude! :)

It's parked right next to the dud.

I'll shut up now! :burnout:

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Scott - my sentiments are more along the lines of tone4days'. All I'm saying is that with my past experience with gibson I'm just downright afraid to put down the money for one ever. I don't know if I could ever justify it to myself when I'm sure halfway across the store is a better quality guitar for half the price. In reality I've actually been looking around for a good Les Paul recently, and all I've found are duds so far, or very bland uninspiring pieces of wood. I think that's saying enough right there. I don't have an agenda with Gibson. Once they start caring about putting out more quality instruments I'll start taking them seriously again.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'm telling you Gibson and MF/GC are in bed.

I used to think that Les Pauls kinda sucked. Why? Well, the only ones I ever played were at Mars or at Guitar Center. Inevitiably, the strings were waaaaay dead, the guitars were dirty, some misguided customer trying to adjust the bridge, etc.,. Then I actually ordered a new goldtop standard back in 2002 from Guitar Trader. About that same time, I found a deal and a half on an Ebony Standard. Due to marital issues, I had to send back one of them. Considering I only payed 1000 bucks for the used ebony standard, the new Goldtop cost 1350 (this was just 2 1/2 freaking years ago!). Both guitars were excellent. That brand spankin' new Goldtop Standard taught me not to trust guitars hanging on the wall at mass market dealers. End of story.

Then I got into the LPF (which does NOT suck by the way) and discovered the joys of the Historic Reissues. I spotted the R8 I still own and feel in love with the top. Dave's had a great approval policy, so I traded him in my ebony standard and gave the R8 a try. It was just freaking excellent. There was just the tiniest bit of red stain bleed onto a small part of the neck binding. But everything else was just the bomb. So, I chalk that up to guitars that are painted by hand the fact that some colors tend to bleed through on vintage bindings, just like they did back in teh late 50's.

PRS refuses to put the natural scraped binding on certain colors because of this type of issue. It's their company policy. You'll never see a Violin Amber PRS with the natural binding.

If you're not trying a Gibson from a reputable small dealer that sends back any duds that slip through the QC channels, you're asking for trouble. Maybe this is why Gibson is making those little guy dealers lives so miserable lately. Too many returns?

I think it is absurd that gibson doesn't seem to care any more. Maybe they're trying to inflate their numbers in preparation for sale. WHo knows. Something is up, that's for sure.

Go find a small dealer and try a good Gibson for yourself if you've only checked them out at GC, Mars or Sam Ash. They are worth the effort.

I just bought used. That took a sale out of an Indie dealer, but I saved many hundreds over new. I feel bad for the small dealer I was in negotiations with, but all they had were the last few 2004 models that weighed entirely too much for my old back.

I see it on many guitar message boards where people love to jump on the Gibson Sucks bandwagon. For that guitar to ever have even made it out of the MF warehouse is shocking to me. But then again, it's not. They are all about mass transactions. But, at least they have a more than generous return policy.

If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. That's probably what I should have typed instead of you get what you pay for. Definitely not what I was trying to infer, but it did come across poorly.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'd chalk it up to some new hire at the factory or something. Send it back. no big deal. It does suck that you have to wait again.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'm in agreement with Scott's comments. I'll also add that I have a hard time being sympathetic to anyone who buys a guitar, sight-unseen, from a warehouse. Sorry, but that's no way to buy an instrument. You're buying a guitar, not a friggin toaster, for crissakes. If you're even half-serious about your guitars, why would you short-change yourself that way? It doesn't look anything like the pic on the MF website? Well, no s**t.
I'd get a refund, tack on another $100, and get a nice, issue-free used R7 from a reputable dealer who will give you a hands-on description. But, that's just me
:)

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Problem - $1500 spent on guitar = disappointment in quality
Solution - Return guitar for refund. Purchase another guitar using different method.

Sucks going through all of that just to return it, but man, if you aren't completely happy for $1500... That's Lasik in one eye or a cheap motorcycle or mid 80's gas-efficient Honda or a Las Vegas hooker or a cruz for two to Jamaica or a bad a$$ amp or a really cool suit.

I hate to admit it, as a LP is my main axe, but the quality of what Gibson puts out is less than consistent. You really have to search for the right one. And I think it's sad that you can shop for $300 guitars and find excellent quality all day and shop some >$1500 Gibsons and find some rats. I love my LP more than my old PRS, but I'll say this, even in GC, I haven't picked up a PRS that wasn't beautiful. Same goes for most Ibanez and Schecter. Gibson should put out nothing but immaculate guitars for the prices they charge, period. The fact that you can see glue on the fretboards, space around the inlays, innaccuracies in the binding, warped plastic pieces, all of that crap, no matter what store it's in, is just a sad thing. And you know what else, even though I wouldn't mail-order a guitar, just cause I like to explore the chemistry before a purchase, that doesn't mean that a person laying down $1500 shouldn't expect pristine quality just because it is mail-order. It's fifteen freaking hunderd dollars. Expensive toasters run $30. The dude laid down a massive chunk of change. He deserves to wet his pants when he gets home and opens up his package.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

There's no disputing the fact that $1500 is a lot of money for a guitar, and that kind of money should warrant a great guitar, not one with obvious factory flaws.

I hate to be on the "Gibson sucks" bandwagon, but with the exception of some Les Paul Standard, Customs, Historic and Custom Shop stuff, well, they do. Gibson's quality control is not that good.

Not everyone lives in an ideal place for getting to try out gear before buying. Online, you deal with reputation alone. Gibson has blown theirs, plain and simple. I can think of a dozen companies I could buy guitars from online and I know they'll be amazing because the guitar designers wouldn't let one by that wasn't.

So MF/GC has a sale on an item, that doesn't make a buyer "stupid" or "ignorant" for wanting to take advantage of it. If it's a factory second or blemished item, it should be specified in the item description (why should MF/GC get away with not labeling it as such?). Either way, I'm glad there is a return policy and I hope it won't take many of them before you get a good one.

There's no doubt that when Gibson does make a quality piece, it's great, but I have played very very few that ever sounded like it was made with quality wood (we're talking great tone unplugged, sustain etc.). There's no excuse for that given the price range (especially outrageous ones on "premium" pieces that aren't even perfect).

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Wow!..didn't mean to incite a riot w/ my comments :D

I spent some more time with her this evening running through my Valvetronix.

Observations

1) Should have never plugged it in :D thing SOUNDS absolutely freakin fantastic. Diggin these mini-HB's...not quite P-90, not quite standard Humbucker...somewhere inbetween w/ a little less output..however they are tight & punchy, with clarity under high gain and a very slight single coil high end "bite". Should cut well through a mix. Very "articulate". And thats through my Valvetronix  (800 series model w/ BOss SOD for a boost & this guitar seem like they were made for each other). I don't recall my old LPD sounding/feeling quite the same..however that was nearly 20 years ago. Check the soundclip on the Gibson site HERE..thats exactly what the guitar sounds like.

2) Did some REAL close inspection tonight under some bright lighting. ALL the knobs are like that and in the EXACT same spot on each knob. I'm starting to think they are made that way to clear the contour of the carved top. Weird. I've never seen that before. My friend at work who plays inititially pointed the "melted spot" out to me on a couple knobs and I was like WTF? But now, I think it's supposed to be that way

3) The binding flaws...ehhh...I don't think they should be there at ALL for a $1500 guitar...a little red showing here and there...minor...perhaps they ground/sanded them a bit too much in places? A nitpick, but still a flaw. ? is, can I deal with it?

4) Plays fantastic, once I got her home, got a strap, and stood up (I hate playing sitting down). Action could still be lower..needs some tweaks..but not bad. Even the 59 style neck surprised me...I'm flying all over it..just like the PRS I sent back..very easy to play.

5) Don't get me wrong about the top...it's not flamed, but it's NOT ugly...the natural "figure" is very nice..just subtle. I had expected a bookmatched flamed top based on what was is on the Gibson site for the "discontinued" LPD's. However MF did not make mention of that..just says "carved maple top". Honestly, that's not something I really CARE about, I actually prefer a standard ebony finish with no grain showing through, it's just NOT what I expected..so..I cannot really fault Gibson/MF on this.

6) Body looks like one piece..not a pancake.

Overall the PRS Custom 24 I recently bought and returned was a higher quality instrument..the finish, inlays, quality of the top, etc. It also cost $400 more than the LPD, but the rotary switch also got loose and crapped out within 2 weeks (volume dropped on the bridge pup to about half). So...

This LPD just friggin DRIPS tone, and plays even better than the PRS did (which played phenomenally well). MF has a 45 day return policy from ship date. I'm going to give it a serious workout and see how I feel after the stereotypical new gear love/hate affair has passed.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Play it for a few days and if you love the tone, call them up, gripe them out and get them to pay for the return shipping and get a replacement. Glad you love the tone. I've never tried mini hummers. Sounds really cool.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

And in comes Scott to start pulling bodies off the pile like an old school NFL Ref!!!

Plus another to all he said.

I agree. And I'm not on the Gibson-bashing bandwagon. I think they build some killer guitars. But unless someone's been living in a cave, they are aware of Gibson's QC issues. There are any number of reputable dealers who will meet or beat GC/MF prices, provide better customer service and sell the guy a problem-free guitar that would eliminate the need for a thread like this. $1500..that's the whole point. Why layout that kind of coin for something based on an airbrushed image from a website?

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'm really sorry they sent you that messed up axe, but I've been sitting here for the last few hours in my hotel playing this Les Paul Goldtop. It's 7 years old, it's got two small battle scars on teh back and it absolutely sings acoustically. I still can't believe the former owner had all the strings touching the back side of the TOM on it's way to a completely screwed down tail piece. Just a simple new set of strings and a wrap around and this baby is just singing.

Every played a guitar and could just feel it all the way into your rib cage? Keep in mind this is not plugged into anything.

Keep trying as many Lesters as you have to until you find one like this.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Don't forget its all about how it sounds.
Also don't forget - in a few years it will be beat up all the same as any LP without any binding flaws originally, etc...

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

SEND THE FRIGGEN THING BACK!!!

if you are dissapointed from a 1500$ axe thats bought from a company with the name Gibson then you must send it back.
i think that for that price and name you shouldnt accept anything but the best.

also write an e-mail to gibson quoting the serial no. and telling them whats up. tell them that they should WANT to hear this kind of feedback if they are interested in keeping the quality of there instruments up.

a 1500$ Gibson USA guitar should be flawless.

what is the advertisment like for Gibson Les Pauls??? "you will love our new Les Paul with its minor flaws"?????!!!! give me a break and yourself one send it back and give em hell.

you work hard for your money! so should they

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I owned a '76 LP Deluxe two years ago, it had a maple neck I believe. I also thought it was a poor guitar for the money and the seller was very rude and pushy as well. I even liked the 2002 LP Studio better than that thing, oh well it was traded and I got a bit of cash with it as well so I guess I shouldn't still be complaining. Anyway, the Classics and Deluxes are the worst Gibsons ever IMO
