Re: Got the green light for a new amp

I played a short gig opening for a summer tour a few years back and the other guitardist played a v3, it really sounded great in the mix.

They do seem very well thought out and built.

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

I'm kind of narrowing it down between...
XXX (because I love the tone of my XXL)
Carvin V3, because it is a seriously versitile amp.
Marshall TSL because I've always wanted one... And I can barely afford one.

Why would I get the Marshall.... I already have 2 Marshall's with issues...buuuutt those are both solid states.... Buuuut they sound like a Marshall, and I do like the fizzy tones.

Why would I get the XXX, because it has 3 channels, and I really like the tone of my XXL, even more than I did my 6505!

Why would I get the carvin.. It's cheap and wow there are a lot of buttons and knobs and adjustments! I like that!

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

Can't lose with a Peavey, that's for sure!

If not XXX, consider the JSX with your choice of drive pedal ;)

Ok!

And purchased!

And the decision is......

Thanks for all the input guys. I love hashing it out and listening to your ideas.

In the end, the Peaveys will sound like my XXL.
Many alternative amps were just way more than my 6-7 bill budget. $600 was ok, $700 would get me in trouble with the wife.

I found a nice looking, freshly retubed, with footswitch Marshall and talked him down a bit on it!

Tube Marshall! That's the right choice if you want great sounds AND your amp to appreciate in value and be simple to sell.

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

I just bought it like 15 minutes ago, hopefully it will be here by next weekend.
I'll post some stuff when I get it.

Yea Im kinda slow at the moment (self inflicted) I mis-read that whole thing. Shoulda saw my post I deleted once I saw you made your choice. Hahaha.

How long has it been since it was serviced? Id have it gone over before you go thrashin on it and kill another one. Where you hiding the carcasses?

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

Word of advice to you man grab a full set of power tubes and make sure you properly bias them in that amp. Had the TSL 60 those can be hard on power tubes and will most of the time come biased on the hot side. Looks like you are tough on amps so that removes the question of the old tubes from the equation. I haven't bought a set of EL 34's in a while so don't know about whats consistent in new production.

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

Sovtek MIG100H. If you can find one.. These are balls out amps. You may want some pedals for other gain flavours, but it'll take them all nicely.

Though the TSL should also serve you nicely, congrats on the purchase!

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

That amp is definitely you. I love my JCM200 such a versatile amp with great gain and reverb. May you and your amp have many happy years. I still think you should have gone with the Roland JC120 (deep freaking sarcasm).

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

Alright, I learned how to bias tubes. Seems pretty easy to do. Another thank you to YouTube.

Now, for the next step... What brand of tubes do I need in each section? All I want is high gain.

School me boys.

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

Dude, nice choice!

Excited to hear your thoughts on it once it arrives.

Re: Got the green light for a new amp

I’m an alumnus of the TSL 100. If that’s the sort of amp you like, then I think you’ll really like that sort of amp.

Congrats on the find! First thing I'd do, if you are in the valley, is take that thing to Lowell at http://www.huntamps.com/ in North PHX and have him evaluate it. He knows his shtuff, and Marshalls. He'd be able to help you with the tube selection too.

The Tube Depot has Standard, High quality, and Best sets for the TSL 100. https://www.tubedepot.com/tubes_by_amp/TSL100

So does Amplified Parts, and they are in Tempe.

https://www.amplifiedparts.com/sets-by-amplifier/marshall/jcm-2000-tsl100

They also have a nice comparison chart for preamp tubes.
