greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

Chickenwings

Alnico 6/8
i have a princeton reverb II. I dont like the jensen c12n. it is cold, loud and hard. it also gets loose on the bass end if the amp (22w) is set to 5 or more.
I plugged it thru my celestion g12H100 that lives in my marshall and the sound was warmer, chunkier and more forgiving in the top end.
i need the speaker to be able to handle the fat bottom end my amp puts out. It is a very powerful 22watts.
I am guessing a greenback might sound good with the 22watt fender. Anyone tried one with a deluxe reverb, a princeton or any other fender amp for that matter?

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

22 watts will make that speaker break up really quick. My night train at 15 watts can put out some nice low-end with the right settings. Now that the speaker is broken in, the bass certainly doesn't sound farty, but it's not very "solid" feeling. A single greenback doesn't seem to be the speaker for bass clarity.
Who knows though, the way the speaker breaks up, while kinda spongey feeling, adds this nice grind and smoothness to whatever sound, and you just might like it. It's like playing through an a2 pickup, but it's your speaker.
The greenback is certainly capable of piercing highs, depending on the amp and guitar. I'm not sure if the G12M will give you a whole ton of warmth. I dunno, I've not played a c12n, it could just be voiced on the bright side and the greenback could end up being warmer. I'm willing to bet on the greenback feeling more "organic", if anything though.
This is all based on the vox night train. with this amp I've played through the g12m that comes with it, an eminence lady luck, and whatever's in the egnater rebel 1x12.

Yeah i dig the night train sound, but the princeton II is a totally different beast. Its interesting that the NT can make the bottom end on the speaker a bit loose tho, because its only 15w EL84 power.
There is a custom speaker manufacturer here in Australia that makes a really nice replica of the old greenbacks - but you can order it with more wattage if need be. I was thinking the 75 watt version might be the go because the 50watt jensen cant handle the bottom end.

I installed a pair of these:

in my musicman to replace the underpowered alnicos that it had originally, and they are just magic. I like the personal attention of the company owners, and i cant rave enough about the speakers i have now. So i guess i have decided to go with Lorantz again.
What i really want to know is how the voicing/tonality of a greenback suits fenders, or perhaps i should go with the more modern hemp/fibre cone speakers again.
I would like some vintage character and warmth because i play jazz mostly.

The thick mode which bypasses the tone stack for more gain puts out some volume. At full tilt, the speaker really does get a workout.
In any case, yeah you prolly should go for a speaker with a higher wattage than what you have, not less. Everything I've heard seems to indicate that in speakers of similar design, higher wattage ones tend to be warmer.

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

Going from a C12N to a Greenback the volume will be about the same but the Greenback will be a little softer on top (once it's broken in).

However a single greenback in an open back cab will not handle the lows like you want it to plus a 25 watt speaker and a 22 watt amp is not the safest thing to do...

I run either a silver frame alnico Celstion or a Greenback in my brown deluxe but you and I and looking for different tones all togther...

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

Hi gibson 175, i own a PR2 too. In my amp lives a G12H100. I have checked the amp with different speaker over the time like a JBL K120, Fender Gold label, a Celestion 12-65, a Celestion Vintage 30 and some more. I like definitely the H Series from Celestion with more bass and low mids than the M Series or the greenbacks. i would like to test the G12H30 too.

BTW do you know the PR2 site. There are a lot of reviews of speakers in the PR2!

Yeah i have looked there. Its interesting that you have settled on the g12H100. I plugged the princeton into the speaker for my marshall which is a g12h100 and its very cool. I did have a g12t75 in the amp when i got it, but it did not sound all that great - maybe a bit too scoopy and dark - but i have replaced all the caps and tubes since then. I put in a c12n because it worked much better than the stock speaker in a hot rod deluxe, but it is not amazing. It seems so cold and loud with a spike in the top that i dont dig. The prII is very clean, so sucking out the mids is not what i am after. I was thinking a vintage 30 may be good also. I want something with fat mids and enough low end to not flab out. I liked the way the g12H hadled the highs and seemed to compress them a bit. I just didnt want to put one in the PRII because then the two amps would have similar eq curves when i am recording, and would like a different character.
In the last few years i have owned and sold a hot rod deluxe, a mesa boogie DC5, a blues junior and a jazz chorus. All were good combo amps, but prefer the PRII to any of them for various reasons. i am obsessing a bit over this amp because its my main gig amp and i use it a couple of times a week. I am totally happy with my marshall and musicman (after endless restoration and tweaking) and don't think they need improving.
I like the sound of the PRII....i just want to find the perfect speaker for it.
I also have a silverface princeton reverb that i am fixing up for a friend which has a 10 inch altec speaker. Way too bright for me. But it is a good comparison.
So....recommendations for
1. warm
2. fat mids
3. ability to handle plenty of bass without flab.

perhaps a cannabis rex?

speakers i have tried/dont like: g12t75, g12m70, fender/eminence special design, mesa black shadow, jensen c12n

I ran a 2x12 w/GBs w/a 68 Bassman, most excellent! However, it was a closed back cab.

There was a recent thread involving the Can Rex spkr.

Closed back. I see. I just saw some literature saying that greenbacks are better in a closed back because bass is reinforced by 6db, and that a brighter speaker such as the gb is better in that application. I guess something else will be better for my application. I am glad i checked here first.

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

Well i am going with this one:

I will post in a month or so later about the performance in the princeton. I have used Lorantz before in a 2x10 format and they are great.
Any Aussies should keep these in mind.If you call Lorantz direct you can speak to Michael who actually makes the speakers. He can also custom build to your specifications. Top build quality and attention to detail.

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

G12H30 rather than G12M25 in an open back. I see the speaker you ordered is based on the G12H30. Good move!

Re: greenbacks in a fender princeton/deluxe

God, this used to be a no brainer- the Emi Alnico Red Fang. What a bargain they used to be..now you can pick up a Celestion Alnico Gold for about the same price! Too bad, casue i need a pair of Red Fangs for my 2x12 '68 Bassman Cabinet to be used with my '66 Bassman Bl;ackface head.
I wouldnt put a Greenback in a Fender. Period.
I would maybe stick a V30 in that Princeton.
