By the way, if i bought the 5120 instead of the 5435 i would intonate the bridge properly and pin it. ive heard of Cello Rosen, of double sided tape, but is there any way to screw it on ?? or is there any way to change the Adjusto-Matic to a Tune-O-Matic ??

Personally I'd stick away from a big hollowbody or semihollow for high-gain. It will be a feedback-reducing quest which will be almost neverending.

Oddball suggestion - SG with some p90's - you can get some hum cancelling ones from winders like Fralin.

Nope, semi. All jets are going to be semis if memory serves me correctly.

Whats the character of the TV Jones Supertron and Magnatron ? What music does the band play ?

A supertron is a little bit hotter and darker than the equivalent Filtertron classic. It has steel blades for poles.

A magnatron has 12 individual magnets as polepieces so as to give you a different sound. The sonics have a girth to them that sounds real cool and the trons have a low and high end that are really defined, so TV tried to smash it all together.

I'm just in a classic rock cover band right now. The wildest we get is AIC.

BTW ive considered the 5120 as well, but thought the Pro Jet 5435 would be easier cause the bridge doesnt move around (i think the one on 5120 does if im not wrong)

Yeah, it's called a floating bridge. I recommend you play any of them you can get your hands on. Buying a Gretsch on looks alone is dangerous because they don't sound like other guitars.

Adjustomatic=tuneomatic FYI

You don't have to pin the bridge to intonate it correctly. The TOM does all the work for you. It's only when you change strings that you need to use painter's tape etc where you'll know exactly where the bridge was.

P90 are ENTIRELY different animals. I love P90s but they don't sound anything like Trons or Sonics. That said, an SG with bucker or P90 routes will suffice to throw trons in. TV makes them in other pickup housings.

I owned a Duo Jet and never really tried hard rock or metal with it but I really didn't gel with the sound so I sold it.

Well, you mentioned Metallica, so I took that to be your reference point for high gain. This isn't even close.

There's no need to pin or stick down the bridge. Once the strings are holding it down, it doesn't move around at all unless you really whack it. Unless you plan on using really light gauge strings I would just leave it alone.

Not sure why you'd want to replace the adjust-o-matic with a TOM. They're essentially the same thing.

I'm going to say this once more: if you're not into the Gretsch tone and feel, look elsewhere. So far you've talked about replacing the pickups and the bridge, which IMO, are the two most distinctive features of the guitar. You might as well get a Les Paul.

I just saw this thread, and I can speak from experience, because I have gigged a Gretsch Firejet into a Mesa Stiletto Ace. It sounded good, and I didn't have problems. Very, very mid punchy with that setup. So much, that it sounded huge and full in pretty much any venue.

With that said, I ended up selling it, because the Gretsch vibe was cool, but it wasn't "my thing". Mine had a bigsby on it, powertron pickups, the whole gretsch thing going on. It was cool, but I ended up missing some of the heft from the bridge pickup (I usually use humbuckers), and the bigsby wasn't my thing.

Sometimes, you gotta go with a guitar that feels right from the start. Gretsch guitars have a VERY distinct vibe going on. If you're looking for tune-o-matic and humbuckers, I also don't see why you wouldn't go for a Les Paul.

Okay thanks for all the useful info even if i did go with the 5120, i would pin the bridge definitely, intonate it and pin it once and for all. I know some will say that devalues it, its irreversible, but its helpful. So you can screw it straight into the body, correct ?

Maybe the Les Paul would be cool, I have heavily considered it, but it is very expenisve. The regular Studio Faded is 885$...but has the fat as hell 50's neck :/ so to get the upgrade glossy one, and the thinner 60's neck it goes straight to 1325$.

Is there are LP styled guitars you believe to be of the same quality but less expensive then 1325$ ? (I will go up to 1000$)

I really dont wanna save 1000$ bucks and buy used, i know theres nothing wrong with used instruments if they are perfectly functioning, but i'd would MUCH rather buy a high quality new guitar (And there is plenty of affordable, quality options out there, im just looking to see which ones you guys like the most)

I really dont wanna save 1000$ bucks and buy used, i know theres nothing wrong with used instruments if they are perfectly functioning, but i'd would MUCH rather buy a high quality new guitar (And there is plenty of affordable, quality options out there, im just looking to see which ones you guys like the most)

That's up to you, but you can get more bang for your buck buying used. Just do it locally so you can see/play the guitar before buying.

I see two options:

1) Set a price limit and find the best guitar in that range, new or used.

2) Find the exact guitar you want regardless of price, and save up until you have enough to buy it.

Yeah. The fact of the matter with new guitars is that you are going to pay for what you get. If you want a Gibson brand guitar, with gloss finish and 60s neck, you're gonna have to pay for it. Fretfire outlined it ; save up and get what you want, or you're going to have to go and find out what your best option is, but it might not be exactly what you had in mind at first. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I'm buying new, only used I would buy is from a store, i'm not really interested in going to random people's homes to try out instruments :/

However L&M always has some quality used instruments hanging up and if i was to find something for myself, that was in good condition, i would rather buy it used.

But for now, i will exclusively be looking for new guitars.

The Epi LP Custom is a very good guitar for the money, and would meet all your needs. And it's in the same general quality range as the Gretsch Electromatics you were looking at.

For a "real" Gretsch you're looking at $2k and up anyway.

Honestly though, I'll agree with everyone else and suggest checking out the used market. Every guitar becomes a used guitar eventually, whether you buy it new or not.

The Epiphones are nice, for example the Ultra III is awesome, i havent truly looked into the LPC's cause i dont like the colourways, a bit too simple but thats just em talking.

I will look into used ones...in store.
