guitar hangers

Are they safe/okay for the guitars? You mount them on the wall and hang the guitar... are they better or worse for different kinds of guitars, like ones with set necks or bolt on necks?

Re: guitar hangers

The only thing to worry about is making sure the coating used on the hanger doesn't react to the finish, like some rubberized coatings can react with nitro. I suppose making sure they aren't in a place where the guitar can be knocked out of the hanger is a good thing, too (such as if you have children). Structurally there's absolutely no reason not to hang a guitar, no matter the neck construction.

Re: guitar hangers

I'm speaking on behalf of the guitar hangers, Keith, not the weekend-warrior with a cordless drill and 5 minutes of free time. :D

Of course, proper installation is a must. Some of the hangers come with nothing more than three drywall anchors. While in theory those are enough to support the weight of a guitar, I sure wouldn't want my investment hanging from any less than at least two 1.5" screws securely in a stud.

Re: guitar hangers

Just thought it was worth mentioning as a by-the-way. Nothing worse in the guitar world than watching one of your precious axes drop straight to the ground and smash into brilliant little pieces.

Re: guitar hangers

Put them on stands or in their cases. Nothing good can happen to a guitar hanging on the wall. When I see a guitar hanging on a wall, I always think, "Look at this poser trying to show everyone that he has a guitar. Must not be able to play it." All the players I know, have them put away or on stands unless they're playing them. If anyone's interested in seeing them, you can always break 'em out.

I'll be hanging my guitars on the wall of my music room once it's done being built. The main reason for putting them on the wall is to open up floor space. The secondary reason is because I like to be able to look at them. I don't consider myself a poser by any stretch.

Re: guitar hangers

I've been wondering this for about a week too. I've got all 5 guitar in the same house right now, and they're all scattered about my parent's living room. I've got 2 on the couch, one on each nice chair, and then one upstairs. They're dealing with it, but they're not too happy. My mother wants hooks in my room, so they can hang nicely there.

Only problem I still have is what to do with 4 hard cases?

Re: guitar hangers

I prefer a hanger to stand because it's 100x easier to knock a guitar off a stand then it is off a wall. Like Keith said, it opens up a ton of floor space, too. I hang them for convenience, too. I play the guitars on the wall far more often than the ones in the cases. If I were concerned about showing them off then I wouldn't keep the curtains drawn and the door shut in my music room all the time.

Re: guitar hangers

Exactly. (about knocking over guitars in stands)

I've got 4 String Swing hangers I used in an old apartment- I've got to figure out a way to utilize the wall space in my rock room. I've got a big ol' shelving unit full of cases, when I want to get a guitar out on the bottom of that shelving unit- I have to move all those cases.

This headstock break is a result of getting knocked over in a standard floor stand.

I have all of my regular players hung up on the wall; the only one away in it's case is my acoustic. I play them almost daily.

Guitar stands eat up floor space & in a home situation leave the instrument readily accessible to small children & animals. And besides, anyone who uses them is obviously a poser.

Re: guitar hangers

I use "Off the Wall" hangers for all of my guitars. I have them all over my house.

I like the Off the Wall ones because they use three screws, the base is beefy metal, the rubber is soft and doesn't interact with lacquer finishes, and they swivel easy. They also make a wider hanger which works well with my Tacoma Papoose, my Bolivian charanga, and my new Brazilian Del Vecchio, all of which have wide necks.

Re: guitar hangers

why not one of those racks that fit like 5 guitars, my buddy has one and it saves alot of safe and it seems safe enough....

Re: guitar hangers

I use both. I have a rockstand that holds 7 guitars for my fav's and I have 2 hangers by Hercules for display.

Re: guitar hangers

At my house, when the guitars aren't being played, they live in the case- when I was a young lad, and got my first Gibson, I cried when it got a deep gouge in the face of the body- since then, when not being used, guitars go back into the case. Also, my bandmate's wife bought him a beautiful Guild Acoustic Jumbo for his birthday- he hung it on one of those wall hangers for a few months, and now the guitar is totally unplayable- the neck warped and now the strings lay on the neck.
