Re: Guitar shopping again so some opinions needed

I really can't fathom how you could have posted this. As far as the Epiphones that is. I've never played an Epiphone that was better than an Agile out of the box. Maybe after a setup, who knows. I think it comes down to personal preference there, but I've owned four Epiphone Les Pauls, have played a lot more in stores, and I've only played three Agiles, and those three Agiles--two of which I still own--go from being better to completely blowing Epiphone out of the water, depending on the model. Were did you find a store full of them, considering that they are mail order only? I've never even seen one in a store, let alone more than one.

In my experience, the only Agile I would compare to a Gibson is the AL-3000M. I own one of them and I've played countless Gibsons, and as I've said before in many posts, I would put my 3000M on par with the studios and pleny of "off the shelf" mass produced Les Pauls.

Highland Park Music and Pawn was pushing them as their main line several years ago. They had at least 30 on the walls at any given time. I was excited to see gold plated P-90 dog ear covers, which I had wanted for years. Alas, the guitar they were connected to was a pile of great magnitude.

The shop has been sold to new owners. They still have much of the stock of old Agiles on the walls.

We will just have to agree to disagree. I thought they were trash of the highest order.

I also don't think Epis are anywhere near as good as they were when they were made in Korea by Samick...but still. Almost anything is better than those Agiles to my eyes.

And another opinion: I've owned and/or played many Epi's from the 1990's and 2000's; I think the quality of current Chinese and Korean Epi's are the best and most consistent I've seen. I think this has been partially dictated by the lousy worldwide ecomony and inceasing competition.

I also have an AL3100. I think it's comparable to recent Epi LP's. Both are good quality. I don't think either one has much of an edge over the other. New Epi LP's cost more, but there are far more used Epi's for sale at good prices; there haven't been nearly as many Agiles sold, and therefore there's only a small used market. You can get a used Epi LP Std or Custom in nice condition for $300+. If you want the equivalent Agile, you'll probably have to pay almost $500 for a new one.

That's interesting. That had to be before they went internet only. The original Rondo store was by my house and he had them stocked there as well, but I wasn't familiar with the line then. I agree to disagree with you, lol. I can't say that you're wrong, because back then, they could have been poor "cheap" guitars. I've only experienced three Agiles, and they've all been fun guitars to play. I just can't say the say about Epiphones. My Pro/Fx is the only Epi (save for my 68, but that's a whole different time period) I've ever owned that sounds great, but it's also the only one I've ever changed pickups on. I haven't liked the feel of any of them really, but if the tone is there, I can overlook feel completely. The Agiles all seem to have been built just the way I like them, and there may be the difference between you and me.

Re: Guitar shopping again so some opinions needed

Do you have any Agiles with the wide neck profile? Im just kinda wondering the difference in feel. The Dk2 I had been used to has a 1 5/8" nut just like the standard Agile neck. The Michael Kelly I got recently is 1 11/16 which I think is about the same as a gibson les paul. I definitely noticed a difference between the Dk2 and the Mk when I first got the MK. Something is making me think I would like the wider 1 3/4 profile, but im also used to the 17mm 1st fret neck thickness of the jackson and I think the MK is probably around 18-19mm.

The Agiles are a bit thicker than that at around 21.5mm. My only concern is the wider profile plus the extra thickness might be a bit too much, but the standard neck might be too narrow.

Well! Your sentiment makes total sense. And I am officially a total idiot. I have been playing bass for several years, and have just recently re-entered guitar land. So my terrible memory done did it again. The guitars I had in mind when making ALL of my comments on Agiles were JAY TURSERS. I take it back! I have NEVER played an Agile! So I have no idea what they are like. Now I remember when people were starting to talk about them some years ago. It was at this time that I played those Jay Tursers, so I somehow combined the two in my crusty memory banks.

I apologize to the OP for confusing the discussion, and I take back everything I said about Agiles.

Should I delete the comments so as not to pollute Internet search engines with bad info?

You're not an idiot, lol. It happens. I own a Turser LP copy and had one of their doublenecks (actually TWO of their doublenecks because when I got the first one, it sucked so bad I returned it for another). IMO, they are toys. The doubleneck, I gotta admit, was fun to play, but the neck flex was too much. I could barely move when playing it for fear it would go out of tune. The pickups were usable, but nothing great. The purple LP copy I have now is also fun to play, but it just feels like a toy, lol. It's a great looking guitar, but it was really hard to get it to sound good.

No, I just have and had the standard necks. I have fat hands and sausage fingers, so I think I would like the wide neck as well. My Jesuscaster has a nice wide neck and I love it. IMO, easier to play, but it is also pretty thin from the back to the front.

Re: Guitar shopping again so some opinions needed

Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on something, So I should be having a NGD to report sometime in the hopefully near future.

Now, it would be cool if i could adjust the poll and have everyone guess what it is.:omg:

Re: Guitar shopping again so some opinions needed

nah, I already gave hints for that in post #32. Yes, it was chipotle.
