Actually, the two holes on many straps is a handy feature. I use the second hole with a piece of rawhide lacing. I tie a loop in the lace through that second hole and put my cord through the loop to provide some strain relief.
Some guys will just put their cord through the strap and then plug in, but doing that will almost surely wear a groove in the guitar's finish.
Picking up a leather punch from a place like Tandy Leather is a good idea. Some of the straps have factory holes too small for strap locks. The punch can enlarge the hole cleanly.
If I use strap locks, I prefer Schaller.
