Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

MeltedClockologist
Just thought I'd have a little fun and throw out guitar tips as I come across them, or tips that I heard/learned when I was beginning (including and up to this very moment): Feel free to add your comments or questions.... I'll try to keep up with this.

Tip:
When playing barre chords, make sure you don't accidentally bend the strings with you barring finger as this will make it sound out of tune.

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

I can't for the life of me play barre chords with just my index finger I have to use my thumb.

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

ok, adding comments to tips....

ska chords are made of the first 3 or 4 high strings from mostly major chords. minor chords if you're making emo ska.:)

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

cool idea
but this thread belongs in the 'tips and clips' section because its about playing, not about guitars
this room if for threads about actual guitars

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

Yes, you are totally right... my bad.

Admin - can you move this thread?

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

I got one: if you're recording and only using a certain amount of strings for a lick or riff, use electrical/painter's/whatever (probably nothing to strong) tape and tape the unused strings together so they don't make noise if you hit them on accident. I don't use this method, but I may someday. I'm kind of a purist and go for the extra noise I create on accident.

Here's one:

When you're playing in a band surprise everyone by being on time for rehearsals and gigs. That is, if rehearsal starts at 7:00, be hooked up and tuned up and ready for a four count before 7:00.

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

never play drunk! you lose the higher frequencies and you play like **** weather you believe it or not.

I don't think this has ever happened before. He could be like the first man on the moon!

not letting open strings that i'm not playing ring out is one of the only things i've ever really worked hard on. i usually use my picking hand rather than muting them otherwise though.

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

when musically appropriate, learn to play chords of fewer notes - let the other instruments in the band have some harmonic space to themselves and enjoy the 'air' that it creates

That's a great tip and the need to incorporate it into your playing grows in relation to the number of players in the band. For many years I played with two electrics, an electric bass, an electric acoustic, a piano, a B3 organ or synth, a drummer, a percussionist, and a violin player. I had to learn to lay out sometimes to allow the song to breathe.

Re: Guitar Tip of the Day - #1

The rhythm section are just as much a part of your guitar solo as the notes you play. Play a simple rhythmic figure or a simple line and let the bassist and drummer react to it, then react to what they play.

Yup. Very true. And it's really hard to realize that you're playing like sh!t when you're drunk because you just don't think of it.

I remember barely escaping from such a time. Got extremely smashed cuz the owner of the bar just kept the drinks coming (he also pulled something out from behind the bar in a plastic bottle...hmmmm). I went up on stage to play, barely could stand. And I just couldn't hear my notes. Nada. And I knew my amp was loud because I didn't change any settings and I know I could be heard early in the night. So I decided to pack up before I was forcibly removed.

Anyways, I'm starting to ramble.

Lesson: Don't drink (get drunk) and play.

yup - but also, look at how it works in a 3 piece ... guys like andy summers or alex lifeson or rik emmet all know how to play less to make a tune get a sense of expanse

Exactly. Look at it this way, if being hammered makes the ugly chicks do-able, then it has the same effect on your tone/playing.
Let the audience be drunk enough to think you rock, and let the hot chicks be drunk enough to think you're do-able
