Guitars vs amp

Quick one: Would you rather have just one guitar and many amps OR just one amp and many guitars?

Bonus: Why?

Re: Guitars vs amp

I’ll start.

I used to be a one-guitar one-amp person. But, While I was looking for my ideal guitar, I had one amp and bought many guitars to try scales, construction, wood, pickups until I found the one. Now I’ve narrowed it down to three guitars, from which I may keep only one in the end. BUT, now I have three amps and one-two more coming to find my sound. In the end I may keep one guitar and one amp like I started. What about you?

Re: Guitars vs amp

One amp and many guitars.

As a guy who plays just rock and metal and not much else I only really need one amp to cover everything. I'd rather have many guitars because sometimes I need that 'active pickup level' of aggression, sometimes I want a more refined and gentle tone that comes from (slightly) lower output pickups and finally I occasionally seek notes lower than I can get on my guitar at the time, so I just switch to one with a different tuning, or my 7 string. Also I very occasionally like doing divebombs so would need a floyd guitar, and stuff having just that and having to change tunings on it all the time.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Cross-posted. Cross-threaded, if you will.

Re: Guitars vs amp

A couple of guitars with different features like single coils or humbuckers, tremolos or fixed bridges etc and an amp.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Many guitars, one amp.. get diff feel from the guitars to match moods, (explorer for aggressive, etc) needs, (singles vs buckers etc).

Re: Guitars vs amp

One guitar, many amps. The answer why is simple and practical. Amps make a much bigger difference in tone. Even one amp can generally be adjusted far more for tone than a guitar swap provides.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Many guitars and many amps

But - I'll take one good flexible amp and many different guitars

As always - crappy guitar through amazing amp = pretty good.

Crappy amp and amazing guitar = crappy.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Since there are two identical threads and I’m interested in both, here’s my submission to the other one:

Definitely one amp and multiple guitars... pretty much what I’m already doing. One amp with pedals for getting different “amp-like” flavors is plenty, and if I want/need more sound I can always mic the amp into the PA.

I’m currently at 17 guitars and love them all for different reasons... the feels, the sounds, the different flavors or styles that each inspires me to play. I definitely have a number one, but for me playing each of my guitars is a real, unique, and personal experience. Amps to me are simply a means to an end, but guitars are deeply personal.

Maybe a mod could combine these threads?

Re: Guitars vs amp

My amp emulates a dozen good ones and I can DI into a board for recording or house volume.

I'll keep the pile of guitars and the one amp.

Re: Guitars vs amp

My amp is a Helix so it's kind of cheating. If we're limiting it to tube amps, I'd say one guitar and many amps.

A lot of the appeal of multiple guitars to me isn't that I necessarily need a single coil tone, or a longer scale length, or insert other common variation, it's psychological. Different guitars inspire me to play different things, regardless of the fact I can pull off metal with my telecaster or cleans with my Les Paul. It's completely stupid, but it's fun, so I give myself a pass.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Thats like asking if you would rather be flayed alive or roasted over slow coals. I could get by with 5 or 6 amps and same amount of guitars, beyond that it's Reducto Ad Absurdium.

Re: Guitars vs amp

Many guitars and at least two amps.

I have 5 amps that I love that have totally different tones (and a few others that have crappy tone). And I have 50 guitars that could be cut down to a half dozen that could create totally different/unique tones or playability.

Yes, I know. It's time to thin a couple herds.

Re: Guitars vs amp

A few guitars and one great amp would be my choice, or more accurately I'd say a few guitars for each amp.
At least I can handle most guitar issues that might arise, but with amps I'm clueless unless it's a tube/fuse issue.

Re: Guitars vs amp

I need at least 2 amps... Twinish and Plexilike for my sounds... As far as guitars, I'll take as many as possible to fill all the niches.

Re: Guitars vs amp

A Mesa Mark V, and my usual compliment of Gibsons, G&Ls, Ibanez, etc.

The Mark V is like having a whole room full of amps, with real tube tone without modelling. And while the Mark V is the top of the line, I'd be perfectly happy with any of my Mesa amps.

One amp, many guitars.

Re: Guitars vs amp

I always play through at least two amps (and in the past, even three) simultaneously to get a really rich tone. After doing it this way for many years I can't even imagine going back to just one amp, no matter how good it sounds or how versatile it is.
