Guitars vs amp

Re: Guitars vs amp

Well, I gigged for about 20 years with one guitar, a Les Paul, and one amp, a Fender Deluxe Reverb. They just did the job, and I didn't think about getting more, just lining up gigs and doing them. Then along came eBay, and I became a buyer. Currently I have 20-something guitars and 7 amps. Most of the time I either play a Les Paul and/or a Strat, and I change amps occasionally when I want a different flavor. I get most of my different tones from pedals so I guess I could go back to one amp, but I'd like to keep a variety of guitars because they can 'cause me to approach the fretboard differently and that changes my playing styles.

Re: Guitars vs amp

The universal truth is great amp/decent guitar is leaps and bounds better than 3k ESP through a crate ...

Now, if you are in multiple genres, yeah more amps is likely to give you wider pallet. If not, most of your pallet will come from pups and pedals. Then there are dudes like George Lynch who recorded dome amazing tones by blending Soldanos with vintage Marshalls ....

Re: Guitars vs amp

Others have already alluded to this, but in the 21st century, we have a lot of modeling amps to choose from. And, they've come a long way in quality since their humble beginnings. Ask this question in 1963 and the answers would probably be different.

Re: Guitars vs amp

I find it possible to obtain a more versatile amp than the most versatile guitar, so more guitars than amps would be the requirement for me.

But when I'm gigging regularly, I keep at least two of near-identical backups of each, stored in different locations, so that regardless of flood, fire, theft or other disaster, I could still keep working.
