H/S/S on a neck through. Sugestions?

Re: H/S/S on a neck through. Sugestions?

The 650XL is Maple neck through with Poplar wings, so it's going to be a bit brighter. I would lean toward a DiMarzio Breed as they were designed to fatten a thin guitar and add a good amount of drive while maintaining clarity. They were designed with Steve Vai for use in Basswood bodied Jems. HS3's would be a good match or perhaps a Lower output rails pup like a Chopper, FastTrack1 or a Pro Track.

Sorry for the DMZ Suggestions, but I think for this application you'd be happy with them...

My 650xl has a Distortion/Cool Rails/Hot Rails set in it. I tore out the mid boost and added push/pull knobs for the CR/HR. Now I've got 3 volume knobs with coil splitting for the neck/middle pickups. That thing is an incredibly versatile rock/metal machine. It is still my go to guitar when I can't get a good vibe off of anything else.

What do you play it through man? What is your set up? I justs got back from playing it and comparing it A/B with a Mahogany body/ maple-rosewood neck custom strat with a single JB... not even in the same league... the guitar lacks body and definition... today I even start considering letting it go...

Travis, is yours bassless, midless like mine? :blackeye:

Pinto! I was reading about the Breed yesterday! Nothing against dimarzios at all...The Norton didn't nail it though... the HS-3's are kind of lower output to mix with a Breed for instance don't you think?

???? Poplar sounds like alder (balanced, middle-of-the-road wood), neckthru construction adds a heavy low-mid spike, and it has a rosewood fret board. It almost certainly won´t be evn as bright as a typical MIM Strat. These guitars are actually usually quite dark and crushing acoustically, dito for Model 6s....

I´d recommend the Distortion or Custom.

This is exactly what my 650xl sounds like. It is definitely not bright, of which I'm glad. It has a huge low end with tons of low-mids, especially with the Distortion. Right now, I play throuh a Line 6 Flextone III, occasionally I put it through my 5150. It is an absolute beast.

Yeah... I know that it was supposed to sound like that, but to my surprise ALL mids were gone toghether with the jackson midbooster... It is bright, it won't work with a JB, I do have a vintage DD laying around, but as it is definitly not on the bass area I didn't consider it 'till now... but who cares... gonna try it out today and get back to ya...

Re: H/S/S on a neck through. Sugestions?

I would almost be tempted to rip out all of the electronics and start from scratch with that 650. Given it's construction, there is no reason why it should be that bright and bassless. I was never a fan of the mid boost circuit anyway, so I yanked mine out as soon as I got proficient with a soldering iron and a pickup schematic.

She is already open... I will do that today if I can figure out a schematic to get through the push-pull pot that I've got instaled on the volume... :)
