Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

hello!---I got this Johnson tele in a trade with some other guitars and the neck and the body are fine---I am going to replace everything else---so we will see---so many projects so little time!---do you know anyone else who has fixed up a johnson or am I the only one dumb enough to do it?-cheers!---JIMO :smack: :duh:

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

I dunno anything at all about Johnsons...I've seen the Chinese made Johnson Resonators. Are they the same outfit? Lew

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

yes they are the same outfit---This body is alder with translucent blue finish and the neck is cut with a cnc machine---really nice with a satin finish and big frets--it seems pretty flat--it is a top loader so I will either just buy some compensated saddles or change to a string through and drill holes for the strings and ferrules. Will I notice a difference in tone when I change the electronics or will it just work better---it has chinese pots and I guess I will go with some cts pots?---thanks!---JIMO

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

I mean of course---changinging the pots and switches and jacks---I know the pickups are going to change the sound significantly...lol :laugh2: cheers~-JIMO

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

But so far, I'd say:

Antiquitys have the livliest tone, some good quack but not as much quack as the Jerry Donahue, and the closest to a "Roy Buchanan" vibe.

Nocasters have the brightest, clearest tone.

The Jerry Donahue has the quackiest tone, like my '51 Tele, and is my fave by just a hair!

Fralin Blues Specials have the highest output and win the "balls with clarity award" (to cop the Guitar Player review wording) and probably the best overall neck pickup tone...like a smooth Strat.

I am really excited about the new Tele pickup sets MJ is custom winding for me...probably won't get them for another month tho!

They'll be an Antiquity version of the Jerry Donahue lead pickup, Antiquity version of the Tapped Tele lead pickup Seymour and Curly have (something like 6.6K and 10K) and a special Antiquity version of the "Strat tone in a nickel covered Tele neck pickup" offered by the Duncan Custom Shop.

I am especially looking forward to the tapped Tele lead as my original pickup in my '54 Tele only measures abrout 6.2K! To weak for a killer lead tone but gorgeous for rytyhm when combined with the neck pickup. With the Tapped Tele lead pickup I should be able to get both a great rythym tone and a little something extra for soloing.

At least that's what MJ is telling me. She's a cool lady!

Lew

Hey Lew,

Are you still finding that the Antiquities have the closest tone to Roy Buchanan? How are you feeling about your other pup sets now that you've had a couple years to toy with them?

(Old thread, I know, but very good info here.)
