Has this ever happened to you guys?

Specifically Sperzel owners, has this happened to you? The threaded shaft breaks. It sucks big time. I was working on my guitar, cleaning fretboard, frets, restringing, then i noticed the B string tuner was a bit loose. Turned the nut, and it kept turning. I said " WTF is this..."...then the tuner fell off the headstock, leaving the nut.

I already emailed Sperzel about this. Is this how "strong and reliable" Sperzels should be?

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

I've used Sperzels since 2002 and never once have been let down. How long have you had the tuners?

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

Looks like either metal fatigue or over-tightening.

I have had a set of locking Sperzels on a DIY Strat since 1996 and a set of early slot-top, non-locking Sperzels since 1984. No issues with either.

Not on a tuner, but the same thing happened to one of my Schaller strap locks. I was tightening the nut on the strap end and, like you said, it just kept turning until the thing fell off. I didn't tighten that one any more than I tighten the others, I don't know what causes it. I guess the answer is to leave them not so tight? I don't want to leave strap locks under-tightened either...

Bought it last year from an authorized dealer. Installed it a few days after buying it.

I tightened them in the same manner as the others. I've got no problems with the others. As a matter of fact, I don't think i over tightened it because i didn't even reach the point when it won't turn anymore. With the other tuners, they reached a point wherein the bushing wouldn't turn anymore. That's when i stop turning them.

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

Have stock Sperzels on three mid '90s Hamers and no failures. Looks like metal fatigue. Could they be forgeries?

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

I emailed Sperzel the pictures, and full details of what happened. They're sending me a replacement key for free.

I think they can afford to do it. Never ever seen something like this in over thirty years in the market!

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

The Sperzels are the only full locking tuners that are light. This is the price to pay I guess.

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

Package arrived in 10 days. Sent them an email about this last April 13, 2010, then the replacement tuner arrived April 23,2010. Kudos to Lori Sperzel and the rest of the folks at Sperzel USA. :)

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

I'm not going to say anything about the pin breaking on one of mine, because if I did, someone would call me a liar.

Still, I've used locking Sperzels on lots of guitars and had great results. Not so much on the Planet Waves -- I couldn't get the locking mechanism to tighten the high E securely (a .009). Of course, I didn't just say that. Because if I did, someone would say that I'm making it up.

Re: Has this ever happened to you guys?

The lemon drop caps was a joke, and everyone got it. Different thread. I'll get over it, though.
