Have any reviews for Crate?

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

Well... if you are REALLY desperate for having anything Marshall, you can't do better than that MG for the price tag. The B-52 is a much better amp. MGs are unreliable and don't handle high volumes too good.

Think twice about it. :fingersx:

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

Alright MegadethLP, I'm gonna' assume by your handle that you're a metalhead.:D At any rate, I've owned and used both these heads, along with 5150's, Kranks, and everything in between. As for the Crate vs Marshall debate on their ss stuff, the Marshall (IMHO) farts out at high volumes, and doesn't have a lot of that "spongy" thunk we metal guys love so much. The Crate delivers this in spades, but the mid-range and high stuff sounds "quacky" at higher volumes, and the clean/rythem channel's pretty much suck. As for noise problems, both heads hum and buzz at high volume, but the Marshall is the only one that I've had hiss. Throw a hush/noisegate in front of the Crate and you're good to go. As far as a cheap ss head, if you really want a decent one, you can pick up Dimebag's head that he used to record CFH on ebay for around $200, the Randall RG100 ES. And as everybody knows, if you have the money, go tube!:D

JeffB,

you are totally correct that this guy cant play for beans and is a moron. But the sound is pretty darn good. i think he is completely pulling everyones leg by trying to teach them Halen, but that is not my point.
i just think that the amp sounds real good for a SS and you dont need a tube amp to sound great. your great playing will do that for you.

i heard a Marshall AVT compared to the crate and the crate kicked its butt to my ears.

Actually I don't think he's a bad player..he does EVH better than I can..I don't think I know one VH song anyway (how to play it , I mean) Never was a huge fan :laugh2:

I also think his tone is good..especially considering the amp! Then again, recording "magic" can change things wholly into something they are not, tonewise. I can make my firebird sound like a les paul recorded, though in person the difference is easy to tell.

I just meant he's....a moron. :laugh2: He calls a JB a PAF type pickup..thinks ToneZones are active pickups, and says scooping mids are the way to go. May work for him with his choice in gear...in fact does. However I think it's bad advice for general consumption of those trying to get "the brown sound". He also keeps throwing around the "pro" term alot like he's some kind of veteran/seasoned studio hot shot. Maybe he is. But I suspect he wouldn't be playing a crate SS 2x12 and doing VH copy lessons online with a cheap webcam if he was...but thats just my guess.

As for the topic at hand, I don't necc think SS (or modelling or digital) automatically means "suckage" either. especially if you are in a situation where you can't crank a tube amp up most of the time. For low to medium volumes, SS/Modelling will do a fine job, and better than tubes if we are talking any kind of gain.

Well, I'm kinda new to guitar. All I've owned were Marshalls.... I like the distortion. But if you any amps with great distortion for metal/hard rock i'll be more than willing to try them out.

I definitely need to try out the B-52

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

Yeah Jeffb,

i totally agree with you on the Pro thing. LOL! when i first saw it i was like " if this guy is pro that what am i?? a guru or something??" cause i dont consider myself to be a Pro but i totally can play a million times better than this guy. and i dont come out and "push" how to play Halen.
Its pretty funny actually.
i just think that those amps are actually really good. tried one back to back with a Marshall AVT50 and the Marshall sounded real good but on like one or something. the more you turned it up the more fizzy it got.
But the crate was waay better.
would have bought it too but i finally convinced myself that i payed my dues a ton and i deserve to treat myself to a boutique amp.

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

i don't know about most of the SS Crate or Marshalls, but i think that new Crate Powerblock sounds fantastic, i couldn't believe my ears. That thing is a steal for only friggin $200!

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

I can't tell you anything 'bout the crate, but I have a mg100dfx and for metal it sucks.... the only option for a "decent" metaltone is a distortionpedal through the clean channel. and be carefull 'bout the bass, the speaker is worn out really quick if you play loud... if I 'd had to buy another SS, I d' go look for something else (but don't know what :laugh2: )

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

a speaker swap helps the MGs immensely..heard a 50 watt combo a guy put a diff speaker in...I think some kind of eminence...maybe a celestion...was quite some time ago, and it sounded MUCH better

When Marshall SS stuff stopped being built in jolly old England it went to crap for the most part. It's useable for sure and a serviceable amp for those on a budget. As are the Crates...but I think the B52 is better deal for the $. It sounds more like the old UK Marshall SS stuff, and will do rectumfrier if you are into that tone as well.

Re: Have any reviews for Crate?

I have a MG100DFX and tone wise i would say its pretty poor. For playing with a band this thing is more or less useless, it gets so lost in the mix and is horribly buzzy, i would hate to have to do a gig with this amp and would explore every other amp on the market at a similar price before ever buying one again. It does the job, but does it pretty poorly in my opinion, especially when its attempting to do high volume. Its buzzy for me and i don't play high gain metal, so i imagine it would only be worse with the gain cranked.
