As most of you know with a head and cab, the sound levels are different at different heights/distances. How do you guys EQ your head; So it sounds good at ear level with the cabinet, or so it sounds good when you're standing infront of it? Far away? Close?

I've found that with my Peavey, when I'm sitting or at ear level to the cab, it can be kind of icepicky, even though it sounds great standing. Should I EQ it so that it sounds great at ear level, and slightly dark standing?

depends, if you're on a stage, make it sound good from where the people will be standing, so put your head like level with theirs & EQ

if its gonna be on the floor, then EQ for standing

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had the same problem, then when I switched to my Splawn head I lost all that nasty harshness. I play every week and always EQ to the stage/room I'm in. This weekend we played on a floor type of stage with drum riser and it had cement floors. I backed all my high frequencies down and it sounded great. If I'm in a carpeted club I may bring them up.

I also noticed when playing on a large wooden or hollow stage everything is super boomy so I back my bottom-end down a notch.

Most of the time I have my setting pretty flat, maybe remove some bottom and put up the mids abit.
Depending on how crunchy I also use my precense from flat to almost all the way...ziing;)

Re: Head + Cab Guys, Distance/Height EQ Question

Normally, my cabinet is about 2 feet off the floor. My problem is that it's a very directional cab, and doesn't focus for about 20 feet. So if I've got it set at a point where I think it's kinda loud, it's cutting off heads in the crowd. I've gotten used to not really hearing it all that much onstage, but going out into the crowd every so often to check levels.
