Headphone volume box

I'm recording some stuff with my bass player and we have to do it listening through headphones because walls here are paper thin. Sound path is instrument -> Scarett 2i4 -> Reaper w/ Bias FX. Sound card only has one headphone output jack so using a y-cable to cennct to set of headphones. Drawback being we can't adjust volume individually, and his hearing is shot, so I have to wear ear plugs under mine. Hets tedious after 8 hours of recording.

My thinking is this - since there's already a preamp for the headphones built into the sound card, getting an external headphone preamp is overkill. Could I just build a splitter box with separate volume pots? Basically, stereo jack -> hot wires to two volume pots, wired like in a guitar -> two stereo jacks. Is this possible? Do I need specialty pots, as i'm sending a (well, technically two) stereo and not a mono signal?

A headphone amp isn't much more than what you've described. The most basic ones are cheap and tend to get the job done. $25 and up.
