Helix

Re: Helix

If you are happy with the Fractal, you should continue to use it.

Ive been hearing opposite regarding snapshots on the Helix FB page. There are L6 reps as well as users who participated in the beta tests on the page.

I'll be getting Native, especially since it can be loaded on up to 4 computers. I won't use it often, but it would be great for it to be on the computer used to mix our band's recordings.

I've been following Helix Native on thegearpage & Line 6's Helix Native [and Helix hardware] forums since I heard about Helix Native. They've been saying snapshots weren't ready in time, but they wouldn't be stomped on, as long as they weren't edited.

Opposite? Here's the Helix Native Pilot's Guide (manual) on it: "Snapshot Assignments At this time, Helix hardware "Snapshots" are not supported in Helix Native. Therefore, if you import a preset exported from Helix hardware that includes snapshot controller assignments, the preset will load within Helix Native with the last-saved snapshot and its settings in use. Edits that you make to options that may affect the snapshot-assigned options (such as the bypass state of blocks, parameter values, etc.) will overwrite the snapshot controller settings within the loaded snapshot. No Snapshot other than the loaded one is otherwise affected, thus all other snapshot data is retained in the preset when exported from Helix Native and imported back into Helix hardware."

Manual also says maximum of 3 computers simultaneously for one license.

"If it makes you feel better, 2.30 is not ready. Ben and Sam are still working on models and development of at least one (small) feature hasn't even begun. Best guess: 5 new amps, 7 new effects." --Digital Igloo, post #1167 on TGP Helix Native Plug-In thread

Later, after discussing Helix Native almost certainly shipping this week [now up to a certainty, though they haven't announced whether it's later today, tomorrow, or thursday]: "The meetings are now all about Helix Native 1.01 and 1.10/HX Edit 2.30." --Digital Igloo, later on in TGP thread.

Re: Helix

Though few musicians like using a full blown computer live.

Few guitarists.

Those musicians involved in electronic music, DJ's/etc, regularly use laptops during gigs.

I find it funny sometimes when guitarists will trust obsolete tube technology where any moment a fuse or tube could blow out... but they won't trust a Macbook?

Re: Helix

Computers have a lot more ways they can fail than stage-ready gear.

Of course, a lot of people who dismiss computers are the same ones who have pedal chains they can't debug when something goes wrong live... *ponder*

Windows 10 is a mess for that sort of use. Forced updates whenever they decide to, sometimes downloaded in background and not triggered for several reboots... If you don't have access to enterprise edition, I couldn't see using it.

Tubes will keep operating if line voltage drops too low. I know clubs aren't the electrical horror shows they used to be, but brownout conditions still do happen, and where all it causes is a responsiveness change in a tube amp, it can cause digital gear to go insane.

I don't understand gigging without a power conditioner and using things that don't run off batteries. Seen too many trainwrecks where things like that have happened.

Re: Helix

A few guitarists I know play live with Macbooks. It works for them. If I had a Macbook, I'd consider it. The effects chains you can come up with would be impossible, or at least very difficult with pedals. Keyboard players have been using VSTs live for years.

Re: Helix

For those that are curious about Helix Native, you can download and use it for 14 days, for free.

I may just do this. I have some recording to do next week (just demos) so this would be a good chance to check it out.

Re: Helix

:argh:

My recording software is not 64-bit, so Native won't play with it. :(

The Helix has ridiculous possibilities. I'm still learning more and better ways to program this beast. Ben Vesco has a video about using MULITPLE wahs. :saeek:

Re: Helix

The craziest thing is that I've learned better ways to program the HD 500 since I bought the Helix.:smack::34::smash::18::omg::eyecrazy::scratchch:banghead::chairshot:doh::blackeye::eek5::11::sad:

Re: Helix

You know, the clips of the Helix I've heard were like 100x better than the HD500. I owned the HD500. I couldn't get those sounds out of it.

Re: Helix

Just a little heads up about interfaces, and what I have experienced with Native. I started out using my old Line 6 UX2. It's been reliable over the years and has worked well with everything. But it didn't get along with Native, for whatever reason, at least with Native in my laptop. I had latency I couldn't get rid of, weird pops and clicks that I couldn't get rid of, it made EZDrummer2 act weird and crash it's audio engine, and would overdrive my signal.

So I bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and those problems went away. I'm not saying that this is "the" interface to buy, but it's a good one it use with Native. Very very little latency (you really really have to listen to perceive it), it sounds better with all of my plugins than the UX2, and the other weirdness I was having is gone.

Re: Helix

Interesting.

What are you interfacing? Are you plugging a guitar or other instrument into the interface and using Native to get your tone?

Dave, I'd have to agree. I like the HD500, but the Helix is light years ahead.

Re: Helix

A year later, and the helix remains the best equipment purchase I've made, after my #1 guitar.

I do occasionally have to adjust output volumes, but that is less frequent than I would have to adjust an amplifier.

I'm seriously considering selling my amp. I haven't plugged it in for over a year. :saeek:

Re: Helix

I don't use my amp since I got my Fractal. I did just order the HX Effects. It gets here Friday.

I've had mine for over 2 years now, and still love it. It's my main rig. And so far, I've sold off my Splawn, Super Sonic 60, and gave away my little practice amp. I still have my VTM120, JVM, and Triple Rec Reborn. The VTM was my first amp and the JVM is the first amp I modded, so there's sentimental value there. I'd sell the Recto, but the other guitarist in my band is using it because his XXX is on the fritz.

You'll be amazed at what it can do. I love my H&K Grandmeister Deluxe 40 too much to go full Helix, but upgrading from a M13 as a no brainer.
