Help me choose a good small tube amplifier

Re: Help me choose a good small tube amplifier

We all admire you for your candor, but this isn't really the appropriate place, nor was preference really discussed.

Really? You had to explain the joke? The bluntness wasn't enough? Yuck.

Re: Help me choose a good small tube amplifier

It took me forever to find the perfect small tube combo and now I have it:

Laney TI15-112 Tony Iommi

Beautiful modded vintage British tones
15 watt or "Less than 1 watt" inputs
Emulated recording out
Emulated headphone out
FX Loop
CD/MP3 input
Built in boost
Ignore all the downtuned death metal reviews (unless that's what you're after!), this amp sounds like an expert modded Marshall Super Lead or Plexi type amp and will do low gain bluesy tones beautifully, classic era metal, '80's metal and hard rock, and modern high gain. For home you ... well worth it!

I agree. The TI15 112 is really quite remarkable.
When I first unboxed it, I liked it, I really thought I had a great amp.
Then after several months just for kicks, as I had some in the cupboard, I re-tubed it with high quality vintage tubes, now I love it!
I wasn't knowing what I was missing.
Im not trying to sell the idea of re-tubing, as I was sceptical that it woould change very much; however There was a marked difference.
Using the vintage tubes it reduced the gain and increased the versatility and range of the amp.
The lower gain and clean settings came to life with sparkle and clarity.
However there is still so much gain on tap it crosses(no pun inteneded) all genres.
Best bang for the buck I've ever came across. Letting it warm up for 10-15 minutes makes a difference
as does giving the speaker a few weeks of breaking in.
What you really have in this amp really shines if you need more loudness, use the DI out to a power amp and a bigger cab.
As I said best bang for the buck I've ever come across the controllable FX loop is stellar too.
Granted your not going to get fender deluxe reverb clean tones but that's not what this is for and what you do have is much more than enough.

Re: Help me choose a good small tube amplifier

I would hope that the OP has bought his amp by now otherwise he'd still be looking ... after 2 1/2 years.

Re: Help me choose a good small tube amplifier

I have the VHT Special 6 Ultra, and I can't help thinking that the plain Special 6 may be a better amp for the money; the Ultra has a lot of extra features that I don't really find that useful, and is a much bigger and heavier head as a result (if you're looking at the combos, the Ultra is a 1x12, while the plain Special 6 is a 1x10 which may also influence your choice.

Something else that may be worth looking at is the Laney Cub 10; I'm not sure if they are as cheap in the USA as in Europe, but they seem like excellent value for money over here.
