Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

So I sometimes come to this forum just to browse around and learn some new things. Lately I have been reading a lot on the Seth Lovers and listening to the sound clips. They sound perfect for the sound I want to get and I was thinking of going through Warmoth or some other place and building a guitar. I have had a lot of different guitars and they were made out of many different woods and that always seemed to effect the tone somewhat(Ibanez Rg-basswood, Les Paul Jr Special +-mahogany etc) What type of wood matches well with the Seth Lover set or does it really not make a difference in your opinion . A little off topic but I am selling my Squire strat with DD/bridge Invader/neck on Ebay if anyone is interested. $300 & shipping takes it if no other bids are made.

It depends on what type of tone you are shooting for.

What's your goal with this Warmoth project? What type of music?

I love Seth's in mahogany. I have them in my '61 LP/SG now. It's probably a matter of preference. Overall they're great pups.

First and Foremost WELCOME!!!!!!

Most guys like the seths in mahogany (which has already been demonstrated) Stevo had tried em in his tele if I remember right. They are an Alnico 2 pup so they are warmer than the comparable A5 pup, but also with less string pull.

Yet again we come to the question of what you want from your guitar?

Heres the deal. Im a little tired of the hard rock/metal sound it was fun for a while but just doesnt do it for me any more. Part of my goal is to find neck that is more comfortable for me to play. Yeah, Ive heard it before, if you practice/exercise/stretch fingers more often you should be able to play about any neck and that is right to some extent. I have small hands and dont have fingers that can stretch the whole fretboard (stupid example but you know what i mean) I was thinking of something along the lines of an old Mustang neck. As for wood Ive had guitars made of Alder, mahogany, basswood, some 80s kramer with I dont know what kind of wood Ive found that this seems to have an effect on tone. Weight is not an issue. Looking for more of a classic rock sound. Does this help?

It absolutely does!

For a more of a classic rock sound go with mahogany. The old LP's used it and if that's the sound you want to emulate get the wood. Another possiblily is alder...say if you're going for more of a super strat configuartion, then you'll have authentic strat and LP-esque tones.

If it was me I'd personally go with Korina. Warmoth offers it for an up-charge and it is similiar to Mahogany but with a bit more urgency. I really like it and hope to pick up a Korina guitar in the future.

So a least Im getting some input here how about this some specs and a few questions
First some specs
24" Mustang neck Birdseye maple neck and fingerboard
Standard thin neck fender or wizard back profile
Stainless Steel frets vintage
Mother of Pearl Inlay
Earvana nut
Satin clear finish

Body
Korina (its funny cause thats what I was considering all along)
Mustang body
American Standard Trem
Artic White Finish
Volume tone tone like a strat
Seth Lover set

Now a few questions maybe you or someone you know could help. What kind of pots? Can you split Seth Lovers well I know you can get them with 4 conducter so you can but will it work well? Five way switch?

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

If you want a classic rock tone, I'd go with alder or mahogany with a maple neck. I'd be cautious about the Mustang neck. Personally, the shortest I'd go is the 24 3/4 Gibson scale. I have short fingers, and although I find 24 3/4 easier to play, I prefer the tone of 25.5. I'd go with the standard thin and stay away from th wizard back profile.

I think a Seth would work great with either of those woods.

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

Never tried it, but I've always been curious. I've never heard a clip of guitars that were otherwise identical except that one was korina and the other was mahogany, but I have heard two otherwise identical guitars, one of which was swamp ash and the other was korina. To me, the korina sounded like mahogany.

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

The SL bridge is great in mohogany - lots of character in the midrange area. Slightly loose bottom end.
I took mine out of my Les Paul and put it in one of my teles. The low notes are really tight on the tele, and it's a nice compliment for the pickup. I like the sustain of the Les Paul though.

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

I put a Seth Lover set in my Les Paul double cut plus and they made that thing so sweet! I get questions and comments about the tone all the time. For vintage tone the Seths can't be beat.

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

I played a Korina 57 LP junior RI and it sounded phenomenal. The sustain is great, the thickness is still there but the heaviness is significantly reduced. It made me want that wood on SOMETHING ANYTHING!!

Re: Help me out here. Seth Lover Pickups?

I put together a Warmoth Strat style guitar.

Korina Hollow Body Strat
Birdseye Maple Warmoth Construction Strat Neck
Duncan Antiquity II Strat Pups

That guitar sounds great, warm and complex but articulate.

I would stay away from the stainless steel frets. I got them on a Warmoth neck. Too hard and brittle sounding. Although for a Mustang scale neck maybe you want some extra brightness.

I also have a Dean Korina V.

Two of my best sounding guitars.

I have a set of 4 conducter Seths with silver covers used for about one hour for sale. Too bright in my maple topped PS-10.
