Help wiring a coil split with On Off On mini toggle switch

Hi

I am rewriting my guitar that has dual humbuckers, one tone and one volume. I would like to use a mini toggle on off on to split the buckers with basically a kill switch in the middle position.

From what I found, it seems like I need to do the following.

1. Take the wires that are twisted together from each pickup and keep them together but solder to the middle lugs, one set on each side.

2. Solder a wire between the top two lugs.

3. Then solder a wire between the bottom two lugs, and then to ground.

Is this correct?

Thanks!

I think you can do this, but for it to be a kill switch in the middle, you'd need the on-on-on version of the DPDT switch.

There are other problems with this idea, also. You'd always need the split position of the switch to be opposite of the pup selected. In other words, if the middle was the "kill" position, you'd need to split to the neck, when you wanted to play the bridge in full humbucker mode. And vice-versa. It's a bit complicated. ;)

i was always told you never want to do a kill switch with the off position of a switch as this wil cause alot of hum.. gotta throw the signal to ground . as artie said, gotta have an on/on/on

would of responded sooner but had alot of family drama last night

Thanks for the responses..so on-on-on with no kill switch would be my best bet?

Any reason why you want to use an additional mini switch?

You could have 2 push pulls .1 splitting to neck screw and bridge slug and the other splitting to neck slug and bridge screw . Both up will give you a kill switch.

You can of course get the same split results ,without the kill option , with a mini on-off-on. If you want a kill switch with the mini you will need to use a push pull or similar to ground the signals.

Just some thoughts

Re: Help wiring a coil split with On Off On mini toggle switch

The previous owner had a mini switch in it so I already had the hole. it was cracked and not working right so I just soldered together the wires and taped them off. I bought a new wiring harness and am putting in all new wiring. (Was having some other issues. Was going to skip the coil splitting, but I would either have a broken switch or a hole in my guitar I thought would add a mini toggle) really more interested in a strait coil split and don't really care as much about the kill switch. How would I wire up the on off on for coil split and skip the kill switch altogether?

Awesome Brandenberg, thank you...exactly what I needed! Quick question...the wire you have going to the pot I assume is the ground, do I need to have a wire going from lugs c2 to c3?

confused .. on the switch? yea gotta jumper it as a DPDT switch is really like 2 switches that are electronically isolated.. ill color it in a few if that will help

Re: Help wiring a coil split with On Off On mini toggle switch

Yes, so that way both pickups are either normal or split Together off one switch...just wasn't sure if the wire going between the lugs at the top was a jumper or ground...I assumed it was ground and I would need to jumper the bottom lugs...

ok here ya go.. usually the way i do my drawings ..i use the SD color 'pup code as well

well you are correct.. well sorta.. the jumper is needed as both sides need to be grounded

Re: Help wiring a coil split with On Off On mini toggle switch

and if you use a on/off/on.. you can split each pup individually..

I get it now, thanks for adding the color, and I really appreciate the help!!
