Help!! Eminence Speaker problem!!
Hello everybody and Happy new year!!

I need some help about a eminence wizard speaker. Yestarday i received my order of an eminence wizard (16ohm) speaker in order to replace a celestion classic lead in my peavey classic 30. The pachaging was superb, the speaker itself appeared to be ok (without any visual damage) and later on, i began to disasseble the amp to install it, i have done this before with the celestion, so in about a relaxed half an hour it was ready to go.

I fired the amp up and plug my old washburn with emg (an later an ibanez with a sd JB) on it (my main strat is away at the moment) and began to play. the sound was fizzy, little bit distorted and lacking any bass, certainly not the sound of my peavey on the clean channel (volume at about 2 which is pretty low)! As i moved on to some power chords, harder picking and little bit of palm muting, suddently the bass came to sound (like a volume swell) the slight distortion disappeared as well as the fizzyness and my peavey sounded normal! when i quited playing for a sec or so, again no bass, fizzyness etc. Harder picking and bam the sound normal again!

It like an out of phase kind of sound although the speaker leads are correctly connected. I reinstalled my celestion and everything is ok again, so its not an amp problem. I tested the speaker with the battery trik to see if the cone moves correctly and it does although is a little bit more stiff and "plastic" in movement in comparison with both the celestion and the original blue marvel (which both have seen about a year an a half of playing).

Is the eminence speaker faulty? does it needs replacement? does it needs some breaking in ( the celestion was ok from the moment i installed it in, brand new as well)? Now, i can return it back to the online store and have another or a refund...but before i ship it back to Germany (which will cost extra money and will take a while) from Greece, i would like to be certain that the speaker is faulty!

If anyone can help or suggest anything, I'll be glad to hear it!

Thank you in advance for you time and your answers!!
Happy new year again!
Stelios.

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

Without being able to experience it first hand, it definitely sounds like a faulty speaker. The Wizard should be louder and fatter than the Celestion currently in the amp.

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

The spider might just be stiff, try runnig something through it for a few hours and come back.

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

Also, press gently on the Wizard's cone and see if you can hear any mechanical rubbing or scraping noises. It's possible the magnet structure got knocked out of alignment during shipping. If so, it's time to return it.

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

My Wizard got smoother as it was broken in. But, I would check your warranty before going any further. You need to know the limit on when you can return the speaker.

It is a 16 ohm speaker in a Classic 30? I would have figured it to be an 8 ohm. (It appears to be a 16 ohm speaker. Just looked it up. Very interesting)

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

Hello everybody!

Thank you all for your answers, sorry i cound't aswer back earlier but was out of town, to a little village with no internet and pc whatsoever (outs :) ).

Anyway, i think i may have to replace it, it does some noise (like plastic moving/rubbing) when i gently move the speaker cone, noise not prodused by neither the celestion or the blue marvel or any of my home cinema speakers cones so if think its a sight of a faulty speaker. I returned few hours ago to my place so i haven't tried to play the speaker loud for some time, but on the other hand i'm a bit afraid that this might ruin the speaker and then i cannot replace it!

Do you think i should try it or just go through the hassle of replacing it and just wait for the new to come?

Thank you all for your aswers!
Stelios.

Re: Help with eminence peaker problem!!

If it makes a grinding/rubbing/scraping noise when you push on the cone (gently!), then the voice coil is out of alignment. On an old speaker, it could be fixed by reconing. On a new speaker, send it back and get it replaced. And make sure they mark FRAGILE all over the box.

Thank you very much for your answer! :)

Yes, unfortunately, it does some sort of the noise you mention, so i guess it time to replace it!! I'll be sending an email at the eshop purchased to arrange the nessesary details!

Thank you again for your answer!!
