Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

I just got a Les Paul copy today and as never owning something like this, I was wondering what would be the best way to store it as I don't have a case for it right now.

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

$10 guitar stand from the music store works well, as does those $10 wall hangers, or even just leaning it in a corner. Basically the same as any guitar, assuming of course your not talking about some sort of long term storage where you won't touch the thing for long periods at a time, but if your just talking about what do to with it on a daily basis when you aren't playing, then it really isn't going to matter.

Obvious exceptions such as don't leave it next to a radiator, direct sunlight etc apply

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

Yeah, it's just day to day type of storage. It just isn't flat like my Teles and Strats, so it's a little bit harder to find something that works.

DON'T LEAVE IT LEANING ON THE WALL! Sorry for shouting, but if you do that and the guitar falls, you might have to say good-bye to the headstock. And the whole guitar. If I were you, I'd get a hardshell case for it, as in there it's protected from humidity and temperature changes.

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

I have all my guitars except my acoustic on the cheapy stands and have never had any issues. I like the idea of the wall hanger tho, I'm just too scared it will come loose and my guitar will fall.

I didn't say a wall, I said a corner (harder to fall) LOL

With no disrespect to this guitar either, he said its a LP copy, not a 59 burst worth more than a house.

Thats not to suggest one doesn't take care of their instrument regadless of price, but an LP clone with a poly finish will take years of abuse and not complain in the slightest.

I've got a hardshell for every one of my guitars and I don't keep a single one in there. Its a PITA to have to get out the case, take out the guitar, put the strap back on etc everytime I want to pick it up and play.

All mine are on stands in my music room and they've been quite happy. I've never had a single one try to escape or run away on me :D

Half the time mine are left laying on a nice comfy plush couch. They seem to really enjoy "naps" there while I'm away.

If its a guitar that was meant to be played and not stuffing into a display case or put in a vault to appreciate as an investment, then don't worry about it and just play the thing. It will be fine

Make sure you either go directly into a wall stud or if thats not possible in the location you want, get a heavy duty drywall anchor rated for 40+ lbs (they are cheap, about $5 for a box at Home Depot)

Also for piece of mind, get the ones made of metal not wood, and with two screws for attachment.

I've had them for years and never a single issue.

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

My worry was more leaning it against a wall because the headstock makes contact before the bulk of the guitar body and I don't want it to get hit and snap off the headstock.

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

Lean it against the wall ,facing the wall; Then. Most head stocks are angled.
The weight of the body is also pushing against the strings that way.Not pulling away from the strings and potentially causing a warp or bend.

Personally ,never lean a guitar on its neck face up/face out.:kabong:

You have a point there, but do you happen to know when an LP-shaped axe falls down, face up? The headstock will hit the floor with power, and it will propably break.

And, I don't lock the case always when I put my guitar in there, sometimes I even leave the case open.

Oh, and why should I take the strap out if I put the guitar in a case ;)

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

if it is a nitro finnished LP watch leaving it on cheap guitar stands.... sometimes that black foam stuff they have on them eats into the finnish!!!

best thing would be to got to a local music store and ask if they have any boxes.... most stores hang onto cardboard shipping boxes for customers that don't buy a case.... I use some of these boxes to store axes all the time

I like having schaller strap locks on all my guitars, this means you save quite a bit of money by using one strap for all your guitars and putting a strap on is very easy to do.

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

Check out musican's friend... I'm pretty sure they have some inexpensive Gig bags or cheap hardshell cases...

If you don't wanna case it, get a $10 stand.

I'm not too fond of wall hangers or leaving guitars leaning against the wall. But I live in California... I sometimes have to be proactive against earthquake damage...

Re: Help with Les Paul-type guitar storage

I left my '82 Les Paul Standard sitting in a tubular stand for years, and it didn't seem to have any negative effect.

Fortunately, (unlike my Fender type guitars) all my setneck guitars have had cases. I think you're generally safer to keep setneck guitars in cases because if they get knocked over by accident, the neck might get broken.

If I'm playing a guitar on a regular basis though, it sits in a stand where I can get at it easily.
