Help with pcikup wiring possibilities

I've just bought a new Gibson Flying V that I'm replacing the pickups on. I understandsome pickups can be wired so they're in series/parrallel or you can use them a separate singles as well as humbuckers.

Does anyone know whether it's possible on a flying v and if so how? Sorry, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to doing anything other than hit the strings with a pick.

Thanks

Yes you can split humbuckers so that they operate as single coils or you can reconnect them so that the coils are in parallel rather than the default arrangement which is in series.

The advantage of switching between series and parallel is that you retain the humbucker's noise cancellation properties in the parallel mode, but a true single coil option provides you with a brighter tone.

See my post here first:

Whether you can split the humbuckers on your V depends on whether you have 4-core cable or single core braided cable. If it's the latter, it's a tricky job involving opening the pickup. Best left to a pro, or buy a couple of Seymours and do it with them.

Thanks
I'm planning on buyinga couple of SDs with four conductor cable, so it sounds like it will be possible. The only thing I'm not sure about now is whether the option is something that is hardwired in or can be selected either from the switch or one of the tone pots?
Saw your other thread and that really helped me understand how the whole thing works so cheers.

Re: Help with pcikup wiring possibilities

If you have 4-conductor wiring you can fit a couple of push/pull pots to select the coil options, or a 3-way toggle will allow you to select series, parallel or split.

Re: Help with pcikup wiring possibilities

Thanks a lot. I'm now thinking of fitting a couple of SD humbuckers with two push/pull pots (for the volume on each of the pickups). My understanding is that (providing I wire it right) with the pots down the humbuckers will be normal and so the options will be Neck/Neck&Bridge/Bridge, but by raising either of the pots this will make the either of the humbuckers single coiled, so give me more sound options.

Is it true, though, that instead I could wire it so the pots select whether the humbuckers are in parrallel or series?

Re: Help with pcikup wiring possibilities

Not sure I've come across a schematic that selects series/parallel with a push-pull pot. Should be possible though. I'm just about to install a mini 3-way toggle in my 335 dot to do the series/parallel/coil split thing.

Its the same as this:

Remember, it doesn't matter whether those six lugs are on the bottom of a DPDT switch, or the side of a push/pull. They still work the same. With the on-on switch, (or PP), you just won't have the "split" position.
