Help with pickup choice

I have a 2017 Gibson SG special the original pups sound dull on low vol and muddy when cranked, Im looking for a good clear but present sound on low vol and good crunch and natural sustain when cranked up minus the mud. Also giving thought to wiring for split coil and or phase switching but dont want "over kill" thinking either. One problem I have with split coil is the hum when using single coil. Please give your thoughts on pup choices and while we are at it cap and pot choices too. Thanks for your help

Re: Help with pickup choice

Capacitor type doesn't matter at all, but value does. It's worth buying several different cheap caps and trying them out one after the other until you find the value that makes you happy to use your tone control more often. Usually I prefer .022 on the bridge and .033 on the neck, but it very much depends on how you use your tone pots and the pickups you're running. If you never/rarely use your tone pots it doesn't make much difference at all.

If you want a different tone (brighter) but no noise, you might prefer series/parallel to splitting coils. It will have no noise, but will not sound the same as split. Splits are more like a single coil, parallel is like a lower output 'bucker with some bass rolled off. It's a nice option to have, especially in the neck. My personal preference is to split, because I like to have single coil tones . . . but you'll have to deal with the hum/noise.

Before you do anything though, check the values of your volume and tone pots. If they're less than 500K (like if the read around 300k or lower), you'll notice the guitar gets much brighter and sounds a lot more open just by putting in 500s.

As far as pickups go, for blues/classic rock/country you could do worse than a set of Seth Lovers. If you play heavier music, maybe a Seth neck and a medium output bridge.

Re: Help with pickup choice

Split coils do hum, so you might consider parallel. You will need a push/pull for each pickup for that. As far as pickups go, a 59 and Custom set might be the right one. They certainly won't be dull or muddy (a common complaint on SG pickups).

Both are "out of stock"

The Custom (bridge) and 59 (neck) will be fine if you want to sound average.

The Custom 5 and Jazz (bridge pup in the neck) if you want to sound good.

The Custom 8 in bridge (it's really the perfect pup for an SG bridge) and Demon in the neck if you want to sound great!

Both of those pups split nicely and sound really good as singles or they also sound superb in parallel.

Both with 500k pots. I like .022u caps, but personal preference (can sound good with .010, .015, .033 or even .047).

Re: Help with pickup choice

Everyone above has given you fine pup suggestions

I’m wondering about your pots though. I don’t think of SGs as being particularly dark. Maybe start with GuitarStv’s advice about checking whether your pot values should be increased.

Also, what pups are in your guitar now? I’m guessing the 490 series? Or do you have the version of the special that has p90s or firebird pups?

Out of stock in the SD store?
That is because SD is shut down right now. It is slowly coming more back online- the factory is slowly opening again, so production should start soon.

I could use some wiring ideas (diagrams) starting with standard 2HB 2vol 2 tone 3 way switch, run some alternate ideas (suggestions) my way, then some diagrams with push pull pots I have 2 kinds on hand Alpha and CTS both 500k, I prefer working with the CTS pots but not written in stone. Include series/parallel and split coil. However!! Im starting to lean toward wiring this SG with standard wiring but would still like the options available. I might mention either push pull pot's barely fit in the electronics cavity height wise.
