Re: Help with replacement Nut

Yes, but slots heights will need to be tweaked for best playability

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Your MIM has a 9.5 inch radius
The nut you order has a 7.5

As stated
You'll need to tweak that

You may not notice it

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Don't use bone. It completely destroys the integrity of the guitar. Graph tech or Corian sound best.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum!

bone has worked for years. "completely destroys the integrity of the guitar" is a ridiculous statement. are other materials just as good or better? yes. but a well cut bone nut will work great

Re: Help with replacement Nut

It will be a downgrade from what's already in there. So why switch?

Re: Help with replacement Nut

This is another of Clint's 'I tried it once and didn't have a good response on that guitar so therefore by extension every bone nut is crap' ridiculous conclusions.

Don't bother trying to reason with him, I tried that already.....its a lost cause.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

I have a Fender bone nut in my 66 Fender Strat and it sounds like million dollar records and plays like buttah. Not sure what integrity was compromised by that. I have other guitars with bone, some corian, even brass. They all just sound slightly different or sustain differently. Same effect with different bridge materials. The most I’ve ever compromised the integrity of one of my guitars is when I dropped it. Thus my first partscaster was born.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Your strat would probably sound better with a functional nut material.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

I've used MANY different types of nut materials. Yes there are some that I haven't tried. As far as the "integrity" of the guitar is concerned, none of them have an affect on it.

As far as "downgrade" is concerned, that is absolutely ludicrous, ridiculous, nonsensical, and downright incorrect. Bone is generally an UPGRADE from the OEM. After over 60 years of experience playing guitars and building them, my personal experience has shown me that some materials are better than others and bone is at the top of the list. IE: bone is an upgrade. Others may be just as good but when considering all the criteria that are important to me, overall, none are better.

AlexR is absolutely correct about trying to reason with him...but "lost cause" is the best case scenario. This reminds me of a quotation I heard once...can't remember who said it, and this may not apply to any particular forum members, but it says..."Never try to argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level then beat you with experience".

Oh, by the way. Maybe I'm an idiot for not knowing this, but could someone please explain to me what "a functional nut material" means. And then what would a non-functional material be? Wet newsprint? Bubblegum? Saliva soaked licorice?

(Dave, please don't cite me for this post. I'm not necessarily trying to be derogatory to any specific forum member, but just providing agreement and support to comments other forumites have expressed, and my own personal experience/opinions).

Brass or titanium. Any of the exotic hardwoods

Not chicken bone
It's not dense enough

Re: Help with replacement Nut

The problem with bone is its density is not homogeneous. It also offers nothing in the way of helping the string glide through the slots. It has to be cut by someone with experience.

I stopped using bone a while ago. GraphTech Tusq is a much better material for the job. It’s very dense and has a self lubricating property.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Regardless of the validity of a bone nut, it is always, without question, most helpful to ask for opinions first before you buy something. :)

Re: Help with replacement Nut

PPS is also dense with self lubricating properties

Just saying

I believe it is what Tusqxl is based on
I could be wrong

Re: Help with replacement Nut

I think this is the operative statement. I'm fortunate in that one of my best friends is an outstanding veteran luthier. I use bone all the time. Hand selected by him.

That’s the thing. It’s not a magic cure-all. It’s another material that works well when it’s made by someone that knows what they’re doing.

I stopped using it because it smells bad when you work it, and I prefer not to use animal products on the instruments I make. So no smelly hide glue either!

Plus Tusq is better.
