Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

I'll chime in here. I'll flash my credentials by stating I own both a 2204 and 2210.

Those two don't even sound the same. And I agree with Gearjoneser on the sentiment that if you want an 800 sound there's only one way to get it. Yes, DSL's would fit quite nice, and although the 900 MKIII is closer than the DR version, I still don't think the 900's do it well. In the Marshall world I'd go for DSL over the 900.

HOWEVER. If you want to get somewhat there on a budget, Peavey Windsor would be my recommendation. Dirt cheap for what they are and Peavey's are built like tanks.
now i want a Dsl 50 so bad :guilty:

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

i had a clone of the JHS Angry Charlie...good pedal but...it's a pedal...and at the end of the day you notice it :/ that's why i'm leading towards amp based drive

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

now somebody is offering me a Blackstar ht100....damn it....is it good enough? i've seen videos of it and is tempting...

I had the Blackstar HT-50 and put back in the box and returned it within 10 minutes.

The good: well built, easy to dial in tone
The bad: sounded solid state.

I'd have a hard time believing the 100 watt version would be any different.

The Peavey Windsor gives up the Marshall tube tone WAY better.

And now someone is offering me an Egnater Tweaker 40 head...but that one sounds nowhere near...kinda boomy to my ears...or am i wrong? i will try to test it

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

If the JCA50H is too gainy for you try some JJ ECC83MG's in the preamp. They're a mid-length-plate design with a bit less gain that will clean up the tone a bit without screwing up all the plate impedances like using other 12A?7 type tubes can. Circuit-wise, being that it's basically a Chinese-made Soldano Hot Rod 50, which itself was based on the SLO100, it's probably the closest of your choices to a JCM800 2204. The weakest link in the Jet City amps is typically the tubes and a tube swap will help profoundly. A JJ ECC803S (long-plate design, not the 83S or 83MG) in V1 will also sweeten up the midrange in sexy ways I can't even describe in words.

I have a Jet City 22H and a Jubilee 2555, and I've also played quite a bit with a JMP 2203. I can get JCM800 sounding tones out of my JCA with the gain on 3-4 on the overdrive channel or about 6 on the crunch channel. I'm using EH 12AX7s, so those lower gain JJs may clean things up a bit. I'm planning on having my JCA modded with a clean / crunch switch so I can get clean sounds on the crunch channel, along with the JCM800 (and heavier) tones from the overdrive channel. With the amp in its stock form, it isn't really possible to get clean tones from the crunch channel with the gain much higher than 1.

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

^ Whoa- when did you get the 4/6550 Marshall JCM800?? ( knew you had the showroom condition JCM 800 50 watt combo ( 2xEL34)

Actually, it's my '84 JCM800 4103 212 combo that has 4 6550's. It's the loudest, most rockin combo ever....an absolute beast. But I never worry about it being too loud when an OD is in front of it, since the headroom makes it huge sounding. It's no bedroom amp though.

My 2 EL-34 JCM800 is an '86 2204 head that screams. I spent a lot of years seeking out museum quality Marshalls, and both those amps look like they were just pulled out of their boxes in the 80's, then were retubed and biased to sound better than if they were stock in 84 and 86. Same with my 2550 Jubilee.

I gig with my 96 white chassis Bogner XTC though because it's ridonculous sounding. Reinhold, as eccentric as he is, is the king of all amp builders. He managed to harness all Marshalls in his amps, but give you the ability to dial it in to the exact feel and sound you wish you could achieve with a roomful of Marshalls.....all switchable in the Ecstasy. In other Bogner amps, you get tones that no Marshall can reach.

seems that finally i will take the Jetcity option and mod it the hell out of it. Value will decrease but what the hell...i will start saving for a dsl 50 for some day :)

Before you do any actual modifications to the circuit try a little bit of tube rolling. JC's ship with tubes that are meh. If it were my amp I would put a couple EH or JJ 6L6GCs in there along with a mix of JJ ECC803S (V1, V2, and V5, my FAVORITE tube for Marshall-based circuits) and ECC83MG (V3 and V4, which both have cathode follower sections). Get an extra ECC83MG so you could try that in V1, too.You could also check out the Jet City Amelia, which seems to be a little less gainy than the JCA50H from what I hear.

From what I understand Doug at Jet City is pretty responsive to customers. If you e-mail him (doug@jetcityamplification.com) he might be able to tell you how to get one easily.

well, finally i went for the jca50h...it's a beast...much much better than the peavey to my ears...now, has a ton of gain (too much) so i will mod it with time, otherwise sounds almost perfect. I had the impression it sounded worse in the store (the man had a warehouse veteran 30) and comparing to my celestion v-type, the warehouse sounded like...eh...blown? i don't know. But i think i've found a keeper. :) thanks forum!

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

Windsor does a good job on a tight budget for sure. Get a good set of PT's in it and have it properly biased and stay away from it's matching 4x12.

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

I guess is the closer/best choice i have. There is a "jcm800 mod" for it, i will check it out. Thanks!
Any other opinions? is there any love for the Jetcity over the Blackstar for what i need?

There is with me. I find the Jet City gain to be more controllable and usable. The Blackstar can sound good at higher gain but does not clean up well with a volume roll off or do lower gain settings well like the Jet City will. The Blackstar to me feels more like a good SS amp that a real tube amp.

Re: Help with tone: jcm 800 on a budget??

I know you've already decided, but a DSL40C combo is a good alternative. It's a 2 EL 34 amp with the same control layout as the DSL 50. It's 40 watts with a switch down to 20 watts. I wanted a DSL 50 as a more affordable alternative to another JCM 800. I'd still love to own another 800, but I don't gig and I really don't have room for a head and a cab.

The 40C sounds really good with a creamback speaker and some tube changes.
