Re: Here we go again...Sg vs telecaster

I really just like the shape and feel of a tele, not really the stock pickup config. The tele bridge single just doesnt really do anything for me. That being said, I can get along with a strat, lp ,sg or whatever else comes along.
I really just posted this poll in response to the strat vs lp poll. Kinda like compairing apples to oranges isnt it?

I've got a few SG's, and yes there is a SG tone. Take off some of an LP's low-end and mids, add a bit more treble and bite, and you have an SG. Not radically different than an LP, after all, you're dealing with HB's & mahogany, but the EQ is shifted upwards.

That's kind of my point exactly though. You've just described the sound of a SuperStrat, Flying V, Explorer, and half a dozen other guitars I could name. Strats, Teles, LPs all have distinct, unique tonal characteristics. SGs, to my ears, don't.

This is from Gibson not being in touch with the market. Had they responded to the Super Strats 25 years ago, with a HSH or HSS "Super SG" (with P-90's, a 5-way & a Floyd), we'd be associating that sound with SG's, and not all the other models that filled the void. SG's should have had a major rebirth in the metal era, but because the design wasn't updated for the times, they got pushed aside.

Gibson went way off track with the SG in the early 1970's, and butchered the design (it bombed with the public). It wasn't until the mid 1980's that they finally went back to the original 1960's specs. Had they been able to multi-task, they could have simultaneously introduced Super SG's, and got a big market share between the traditional and modern SG designs.

SG's are one of the great electric designs, but never received the popularity the should due to some poor decisions & missed opportunities. Many more people would consider the SG a versatile, high-profile guitar if Gibson would have been more creative and done some things differently. Don't blame the guitar. The world changed it's view of Strats due to Hendrix. When the SG went "ugly" for about 15 years, it lost fans and player endorsements. Hendrix played an SG Custom live and in the studio; had that been his main guitar, many people's opinons of Strats & SG's would be different today.

i keep rebonding with and rediscovering my tele, its turned into the goto guitar, and its 100% stock, i just broke a string last night which means it'll have the 5th string set on it since 99.

by contrast the SG i bought sucked so bad i returned it. which is unfortunate, it didnt fit me very well, didnt sound very good, it feels fragile too. if i had gotten a GOOD one, this posting might be very different.

i am perfectly fine with YOU liking SG's, i kinda like some of em too, just not for me, unless you have a lefty double neck you need kept warm :1:

Both?

-very different guitars and sounds. I wouldn't pick up a tele to sound like an SG and vice versa.

I'm a huge tele fan, but I also love that specific midrange thing that SGs do. Sometimes there's a spot in a mix where you want a certain type of midrange and only an SG will do.

My fave SGs are p90 variants. I'd also love to get a p90/mahogany/gibson scale tele going at some point. Something like this with a different guard and an LP=position pickup switch:

...though I imagine that'd be more in the les paul special kind of vein.

+1 to that!

If you go that far, why not just get an SG? Is it because you specifically love the Tele's body shape? Does it have to do with the saddles? Something else?

Gibson put HB's on the SG Special, and now the P-90 version is the "SG Classic", which doesn't get nearly the exposure it deserves. Gibson should be pushing these instead of robot SG's. I just picked up an import P-90 SG (a production sample); why aren't other manufacturers making them, starting with Epiphone?

If you have a mahogany Tele with P-90's you're definitely mixing in a healthy dose of '56 LP. It may look like a Tele at that point, but the sound is Gibson.

The SG Classic is what I play. It's probably my #1 guitar. I think they're only sold through Guitar Center and Musician's Friend at this point, which is a travesty.

Yeah, I love gibsons but ergonomically I'm into fenders. LP jr/specials are too dinky, and SGs feel flimsy and neck heavy. I dig them for what they are and love using them, but for an everyday p90 guitar, I'd love a gibson spec'd fender shape.

Re: Here we go again...Sg vs telecaster

This is from Gibson not being in touch with the market.

I always imagined how these two scenarios played out in summer 1960.

Gibson HQ: "Hey, Carl, I wonder whether switching to wood filler xzy will improve the looks of our abc lacquer wine red, and did you finish looking into the sound effect from the lower headstock angle? Hold on, phone. ... No sir, we can't give you a Gibson for $150 ... What do you mean you don't like the dark sound, sir? Our guitars sound better, just look at through how much trouble we go making them and how precise our equipment is. You really need to re-evaluate your taste, sir. Have a wonderful pleasant day, sir"

Fender HQ: "Hey, Tony, when you get Donuts, stop by Auto Zone and pick up a couple more gallons of some random metallic colors, will ya? Hold on, phone ... You like our guitars, dude? And you can even afford them? That's awesome, glad to hear, kind of the plan here ... High action? Can't help you on that, I don't play guitar, man. ... No problem. Take care, dude. Bye".

+1. It's a great guitar & they sold tons of them in the 1960's. I don't understand why they put it on the back burner. It attracts single-coil fans that might not buy a Gibson otherwise.

Re: Here we go again...Sg vs telecaster

I think every fan of Gibson & its copies will admit to a lifelong passion for what Hendrix did with his Strats.

Or what Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, Slash and others have done through their Gibsons.

Hendrix could have played a homemade guitar with rubber bands for strings and played it well. I don't think his playing says anything about a Strat.

Re: Here we go again...Sg vs telecaster

I'll take a Telecaster over the SG. I prefer single coil pickups and the longer 25 1/2" scale length of a Telecaster.
