HERE WE GO AGAIN. Which pup for Van Halen

this is quite a discussion over at www.plexipalace.com

they bring up some very good points:

(1) If you've heard a bootleg or the Gene Simmons sessions, Eddie's sound can be really thin and crappy. There is a lot of EQ going on at the mixing console.

(2) The Wurlitzer on "And the cradle will rock" is played through his Marshall and sounds a lot like his guitar. In other words, his amp plays a huge role in shaping his sound.

on the simmons demo's ED used KISS' amps :saeek: i kid you not,VH did not use his 67 on those demo's which can be heard with ease :laugh2:
No ONE pup is ever gonna get ya spot on the old VH tones, if you listen to VHoholics clips,he gets real close due to the MARSHALL not the 59b
I would love to hear VHoholic playing on a crate amp :laugh2: he would still play great but i doubt he would be nailin any ole VH tones even if he had ED's original pup in his axe!! :laugh2:

Eddie talks about the time Ted Nugent asked if he could try EVH's gear. Eddie said Ted still sounded just like Ted! Lew

yes because TED would play like TED. a guy like VHoholic who without a doubt has that EDDIE approch to his playing will sound more like EVH if he played through eddies old gear than the NUGE who has a very DISTINCT style.

Yeah my 59 sounds very good in my strat.
But I am looking for a more fat older sound for my Wolfgang...I already have the APH-1 neck.....those are sweet pu's for an opensounding guitar, the Demon works very well right now, but I am warming up to a APH-1 bridge...just to try it.

Er I have...I felt it was kinda er dunno not doing much...but maybe I should try it again.
My trouble is that I am caught with this, I really like A2's alot and I am mostly rooted in old PAFs and singlecoils, while I have a few middle/hot pickups and I do like them, but sometimes it gets too much...I really want something sweet and even, and if I whack it it should scream ;)
I really like my APH-1 neck pu and if the bridge is just as sweet...uh;)

I know, this has been asked dozens of times, but on the old forum. Can't find anything on this new one. His sound has a sort of wah to it. I'm wondering how the pickup is eq'd. Which one will get us in the ballpark. I know it has alot to do with his amp, hands, use of whammy bar but how 'bout it?
I agree with alot of the posts on this thread. A repro 61, 59b with A2,3 or 5 mags or most good PAF pickups will get you in the ballpark for different variations of that old VH type sound. You may have heard them already but if not i have a bunch of VH clips in my signature using a 59b to give you an idea.

Let's definitely not give the newbie a hard time with his question. Even though this subject has been beaten to death on this Forum (new and old), an appropriate answer is something of the following:

1. First and foremost, get the right amp. VHoholic has got the goods with the Marshall amps and thus he gets the right tone. That should be the starting point.

2. Second, learn the chops - you won't get the definition unless your fingers are ready. If you don't have the definition and clarity of his licks, you'll never get the tone quite right.

3. Lastly, choose between the '78 Custom Shop model or '59 with various magnets. If you are adventurous, try a hybrid - a 59/Custom coil mix. Apparently, that works very well, too.

If you can put all three together, you will be good to go. Listen to VHoholic's clips - he gets the closest of anyone I've seen.
