Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I'd say that for the purpose of the a/b comparison, the mission is accomplished with success. I actually didn't expect the difference be so noticeable.

Great job, Franknfilms. Pat yourself in the back, you certainly deserve it.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Specially in the mid-gain section the change was VERY clear, lost a little bit of bass but it's sounds more articulate. Great demo really helpful ... thanx man

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

i can totally hear a slight reduction in bass with the hex poles adding clarity for those low strings.
a success imo. =D

my thoughts exactly.. Just a tiny bit tighter. Frankn, still have the same feel to the pickup? Im guessing so. Great playing by the way!

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Phenomenal success I'd say.

Not trying to toot my own horn here, but I'm glad to have been able to make an impact around here having rigorously suggested the mod as often as I did. I wish I'd have recorded first, but Franknfilms (rock on, dude) made a much higher quality recording than I could have. Played better than I could have too. Grats, man.

You know, I recently hexed the bass on a stock phat cat bridge. It reduced the bass issues while retaining all the dynamics, sustain, and organic qualities that people love about A2. It is a certified classic rock pickup that can pull its weight in just about any context. Its less fat and more fit now. You know, a Phit Cat. :)

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

After more playing, I'm still in favor of the mod. This mod is perfect for me because I play with 10-52's, which is a a very disproportionately light/heavy combo of strings. Check the trading post if you want to trade for some of these nickel hex screws, I've got 6 to spare.

10-52 are the only strings imo

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I use 10-48s Dunlops heavy core, I hated 10-52... they make low end sound mushy and loose in my opinion

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Yeah, everyone has a different thickness threshold (no jokes please). For me, I'm horrified by anything over 52 myself, strings that are too thick really kill the crunch. I've tried a few times to lighten it up on the low strings but I always either have trouble setting them up without buzz and/or breaking the low e too quickly.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

here is another interesting fact that ive discovered about strings in my own personal journey, dean markley 10-52 seem to have the right tension for tuning to E standard, but whenever i went down to C# i always had a harder time keep the power chords tight. decided to try a different brand like D'addarios 10-52's and these have more string tension, so when i tune to C# it feels tight and accurate on the low end.
D'addarios in E is just awful tight, cant hardly bend notes.

and yes too thick will kill the tone, but 52s are the sweet spot before the tone gets absorbed too much into the string. .

Oh C#... nop I use 10-48s for D#, sometimes drop D ... if I were to go standard C#, probably get thicker strings ... although my first choice would be 11-50 Dunlop Heavy Core, no better string brand in my book

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Okay, it is time to do some more tone experimenting for the hell of it. I bought these on ebay today.
I bought some of his black hex screws and they didn't fit. The shaft was too thin in diameter and the heads were too big to fit the bobbin. Did the screws you bought fit?

Interesting, I didn't have any trouble fitting mine. I didn't lower them completely flush with the bobbin because I don't do that with filisters so I figured why not let them stick up a slight bit. The tension got a bit stronger towards the end but nothing that had me worried I couldn't go all the way.

The ones I got couldn't be countersunk and they didn't thread because their diameter was different.

I'm thinking either 1.) they don't really fit and I jammed them in there and ruined the threading (didn't take any effort if so), or 2.) they do fit. Either way, luckily, nothing is broken and the sound is good. If I tried to go back to the fillisters, that is probably when I might realize I ruined the threading, but no plans to do that just yet.

Question for everyone that has done the hex mod....where did you buy your screws? Am I using the same ones??? I got mine from addiction-fx on ebay.

I got mine from Wymore. He said they were from Seymour Duncan. Black 0.5" hex screws.

Given yours are same length as your fillisters, interesting they have such a noticable impact. Very different alloy, it seems.
